I suspect you can buy a running one for less than you can repair a cheap dead one.

But if you want a project, that is OK, too.

Don't drag it to see if engine is locked. What if a valve is stuck after sitting in damp conditions. Just try by hand or put in 4th and rock it by hand watching for the fan to twitch. If you get it do a quick inspection to make sure it's all free. $500 gets my vote if tires are fair

You can check Hyds ( kinda) by disengaging PTO, put lift lever up, and in spin the PTO by hand. Lift arms should start creeping up

Great advice. I never knew that but it makes sense.

That really is true. Even when it's done it is woefully inadequate if you have uses for that tractor other than pulling a wagon or a couple of implements around. As a showpiece kind of thing, assuming you have other tractors to use when needed it's a great idea.

Why so many of them are still around is because they really were never worked very hard. They also made a lot of them but even so, it's been 75 years.

I would say plenty of them were worked hard. So many are around is because of their simplicity, price, reliability, and almost every country store has parts for them. Our 640 was completely worn out, bought cheap by my father and grandfather, and rebuilt on a dirt floor open air barn in the late 70's early 80's. I would place money that the old Fords will still be long worked past many modern comparable tractors death.

I agree they had the snot worked out of them but they can be rebuilt with the engine in frame under an oak tree. Basic shop tools rebuild e Hyde and 80% of the tractor.
