How fast can you lose something??

This summer I went to change the sewer valves on our RV. Bought the new valve assemblies and got right to it. Promptly dropped one of the o-rings in the grass. Searched and searched on my hands and knees for an hour, took my clothes off, took my boots off.... Nope, no o-ring. Went back to the store and had to buy a whole new valve assembly because they don't sell the o-rings separately. Guess what I did when I got home. Dropped the new o-ring in the grass.....

Yesterday I was repairing the top rollers on a closet pocket door. For some reason I decided to take one of them off the rail but when I was ready to put it back on, it was nowhere to be found. I searched the whole house for 30 minutes or more but nothing. Getting really PO'ed now because nothing can just disappear. Finally I got back in the closet and mimicked taking the roller off and found it on an overhead shelf which I cant remember putting it there at all.

Sometimes I have found dropped items by repeating the drop as close as possible but watching closely where the item falls. Many times, the lost item will be very close to the impact point of the new drop.

The best way to find a lost item is to purchase a replacement. As soon as you do that the lost one will show up!
Yep, told ya!!

Sometimes I have found dropped items by repeating the drop as close as possible but watching closely where the item falls. Many times, the lost item will be very close to the impact point of the new drop.

I learned that from a Mark Twain novel, probably Huck Finn, about, well too long ago to count.

For small items I carefully drop an identical item (screw, washer, etc.) near where I thought I dropped the "lost" item. This helps in determining how far something is liable to bounce plus provides a precise visual recognition pattern for the item. Usually works.

This is how I learned to speak in tongues and find out how far I can throw a hammer after I find it. What helps me is florescent color duct tape or bright paint markers on tools and things, my tool belt/apron helps too, has a place for the tape measure and my other jingle jangles.

I put my car keys in my pocket this morning. Five minutes later, I started a 15 minute search for them. LOL

Tape measures. I have 2 in the truck 2 in the garage 2 in the shop and lose them all the time. Usually in plain sight.

I often go back and forth between the saws in my workshop and the project site on my property. I keep one tape measure next to the saws in the workshop and another on my belt or at the project site. But it seems like the tape measures always try to migrate to meet up at one or the other location, so I will have no tape measure nearby when I actually need to measure something or make a cut. Pencils play that game with me too. I need to start attaching stuff to my body with one of those chains old ladies use for their glasses.

Let's see.. 4 cordless drills, 2 corded drills, 3 circular saws, 2 jig saws, numerous hammers collected over the past few years, divided by a grownup son who lives next door. Yup, I can lose something pretty darn fast at times...
