Winches hydraulic winch idea

How often do you need a "recovery" winch on your tractors??

Well, I look at it this way... I may only need it 3 or 4 times a year, but I read on another forum about guys spending upwards of a thousand dollars to buy front end weight!! Now, I sat here wondering why they just didn't buy a good winch and mount that on the front? At least then they would have some useful weight there, for similar money!

I also have one of those HF 12K winches mentioned above, I plan to mount that one, on a bigger trailer that I have... Then I have a Warn 12K on a 3/4 tom pu and I have a 25K Tulsa that I can put on something?? I may as well get some use out of some of them!

I have another tractor that NEEDS some front weight, I may just put it on that one ?, I need to think on it some more...

I hear ya. I 4-wheel with a lot of guys. Some have bought "offbrand" lowbuck winches. They work fine for a short, self recovery pull. They are extremely slow and as you said, take a LOT of amps to run. For some reason when someone is stuck they always want me to hook them with my Warn 9.5TI. :confused3:

When they comment on it's speed and efficiency I always say "that's what a thousand bucks will buy you". It cost $1300. :)

Many years ago, starting with my first 4 x 4 (a little bobtail Bronco w/ canvas top and doors), I used to devour every issue of Four Wheeler and 4 Wheel & Offroad. Warn and Ramsey were the gold standard, and I would guess still are.

Me 2! Speaking of winches & Bronco's………. Way back I had a 67 with the 289. I put a 4sp with "granny" in it with an Advance Adapter adapter and a Ramsey PTO winch that ran off the t/c. That made it a 4 sp w/rev. winch. (t/c in neutral). Talk about makin a sutpid kid even stupider!!!!! There was nothing we wouldn't try.

You get one individual tractor stuck 3 or 4 times a year??

When brushcutting I use 1000lb of suitcase weights on the front of my tractor. I never one time thought about adding a winch instead. I'll have to consider that option.

I hear ya. A winch on a 4x4 will definitely deplete brain cells!!!

[/ThreepointB], You get what you pay for in winches. I consider Warn to be the best in electric winches.

It's really tight up there with the loader (like you said) , After making that log winch of mine I started thinking how another winch would fit up front. I have a pretty big bumper/grill guard mounted on the Kub. weight bracket (IIRC it's a 5x7 tube) and that just about does it for space there unless you were to undersling it ahead of the front axle. That looked veunerable to damage to me.
