Wow, 1975, I was working for IBM on computers for the NASA ASTP (joint USA/RUSSIAN) mission which successfully launched that year. Beginning work on SHUTTLE approach and landing. House, wife, two boys, beginning to get itchy feet. Always wanted a ranch of my own. Still have wife, 2 sons, 2 grandkids, been on the ranch over 30 years now. All paid for...wasn't sure it would happen until it did, and happy. Nervously took retirement package at 53 and spent 55th birthday on Machu Picchu with younger son...good times!

Planning??? Big decisions were first job out of college, two house purchases, purchase ranch and build home, to retire. Retirement package plus savings, SS, medicare make things comfortable, thankfully. Big surprises were fall of Vietnam, Russia, how volatile inflation, job security, interest rates, stock market, house and land values can be.

Man some of you guys are old.

I never have made long term "plans", so the visionary thing never really materialized. I took the bounces and fortunes as they were presented, thrown at me, or as I was directed to do by those in authority positions at the time.

OP here, I resemble that remark about us "old"guys.... we are just trying to pass our learning experiences on to you younger fellows.

Forty years ago I was thinking: "Man, just think, in 25 years it's going to be the year 2000! A new millennium! I'll be so old then, 32!!"

44 years ago I was 21 and re - enlisting for the first time in the USAF...I made the decision that was what I wanted to retire from and thence to a civil service job....yep -- all worked out just like I planned at 21. I've been an over the top planner ever since. I don't go to town without planning out each stop before I ever leave.
