Tractor license plates?

This is what I found for Maine. I don't recall seeing a plate on a tractor here.

Do I have to register my tractor?
Generally yes, if used on a public way. Farm tractors used only for farming and going to and from a farmer's field or lot do not have to be registered.

Virginia has gone after mopeds, its all about the money. Soon your belt buckle will be a fee based license plate. Don't know what will be next after everyone is left destitude?

In Ontario we are NOT subject to the seatbelt laws.

I have no idea about the seatbelts. I hope not.

I guess technically since I am not a farm for tax purposes, when I run my tractor down the road I would need a license plate. I don't plan on getting one.

The only roading I do is about 1-1/2 miles down to the horse rescue place very occasionally for a horse burial. Last time I was there I made a pit long enough to compost 4-5 horses, so I haven't been there in a while.

Here in New Jersey, You must have "In Transit" plates to be legal. Problem is, only licensed contractors can apply for them..
Also, friend of mine was told he must also burn on road fuel when driving from job to job....go figure..

It is my understanding that all motive powered vehicles including tractors must be plated in Quebec, Canada. My company has a branch in Quebec and we see some of the equipment in Ontario from time to time and the rubber tired rollers all have license plates on them. Piloon needs to coment on this one.

The SAC, (gov lisc bur) states that any self powered machine capable of carrying a person must be plated.
Heavy equipment guys solved that problem by putting a "P plate on dozers and excavators.
The 'P' is defined as self powered vehicle on PRIVATE (like not road) property.
An old pick up with a P can not be fined but your sedan w/o a valid plate parked in your yard is subject to a fine if all 4 wheels are on it, consequently you often see a car in yards with one wheel removed.

Often we see a van with a 'P' all lettered up with advertising parked by the road side.
That is a local trick to get around municipal signage bylaws as they have no jurisdiction on motor vehicles only the province has that control but with a P the sign truck is legal.

My buddy purchased a huge fire truck, (airport crash truck from the government) and painted his advert and phone # on the sides and that 'P' plate.
City can not do a thing about it as it IS PLATED.
They are attempting to create a bylaw that would make it obligatory to park vehicles behind a building!
That won't fly as many homes only have front drives but then they could specify which streets I guess or commercial areas only.

I can't speak for the other States but, here in Tassie, I've seen tractors that are used for 'commercial use' tagged. The Shire's rigs are tagged; I'm referring to private operators, including farmers, who use their rigs to travel between jobs (ie: slashing, haying, etc...) on public roads.

I have, on occasion, traveled via back-roads with my rig with no tag with no problem... of course I've got my 4-way flashers/headlights/SMV tag/Amber rotating hazard light on whenever I'm off my property. The local constabulary don't have a problem with this.

Right, I just checked the Tassie Gov website = No plates required as long as you have a valid drivers licence, the tractor is no more than 15 tonnes GVM and you can only drive within 10 km of where the tractor is normally garaged.

I'm good to go!

As to seat belts, we must use them here but if a car was legal without when it was built you are exempt.
Case in question was when I drove a MG TD, 1953 model which was B4 belt laws.
I verified that point with the authorities at that time.

I would suspect tractors and similar equipment would come under same regs, especially when on public roads.

I guess that sounded bad the way I said it. They don't lose that many all at once. They would call me now and then and it isn't always convenient especially if the backhoe isn't mounted. So, I suggested we could prepare for the future a bit and then the weather or my schedule wouldn't be an issue.

They are good people registered with the state for horse rescue and take in some very sad animals. The need exceeds the rescue places' capacities. They usually have anywhere from 20-30 horses. Some get adopted, some don't.
