New toy on it's way. Ordered this lathe, and stand. The stand won't be available for pickup until April 16th. Either the Long Shore men's slow down has them stuck on the dock:rolleyes:. Or those Asian kids are getting unionized!:D I've never run a lathe before. Installed several over the years, but never run one. Should be fun to learn how.:cool2: Grizzly.com® -- Grizzly.com® --

Have fun! Gonna get one of these next?..............

Are you going to Bellingham for the stand? Was it better to have the lathe shipped? Always wanted to stop in the Bellingham store on way to/back from Canada but figured I wouldn't be able to control myself :D

Didn't know there was a store in Bellingham. That's close to me in miles, but an inconvenient and expensive ferry ride away. Good thing. I would probably be like you $$$$$$$$ :)

will probably wait until I can justify a bigger unit like you picked out.
I didn't pick it out, a good friend of mine did. His grandfather worked as a machinist at Boeing all his life, and has a small machine shop at home. Jim grew up in Gene's machine shop. 12 or 13-years ago when I had my shop built, I wanted a good drill press, I asked Jim, he said to grab a Grizzly catalog and come over and let grandpaw pick out a mill for me. I did, Gene picked out a mill, and everything I would need. One of these days I'm going to figure out what some of that stuff does!:eek::eek::eek:

Just one more reason to visit you again!!! Lucky dog... and me too for living so close :D
Any time! I'm going to California the 28th for a little over a week, but then I'll be home and open to projects. Keith the kid I helped build the bike frame with, he must be hooked on fabricating things now. He e-mailed me and asked if he could be my apprentice.:D

Have fun! Gonna get one of these next?..............

The lathe is in Bellingham now, just waiting on the stand. I can drive to Bellingham for way less than $250.00. I worked in Bellingham for a year, when we built the Alaska ferry terminal. Got use to that drive every weekend.

thought you might have been involved in that Ferry Terminal. Figured also you would have to pay tax since Grizzly has a store in Wa St. so might as well go get it if it is there. Way cool... I want always wanted to learn on a lathe and milling machine. Got a shop fairly stocked for woodworking but not metal. I will take you up on it this summer for sure if you will have me! :ashamed:

No problem at all:thumbsup:, I love projects! You know, I'm starting to think, it might have been cheaper to take up drinking, than buying tools!

Well I do like good red wine... but I do know your tools will respect you in the morning.

Very nice. I like the tool holder set it comes with.

I have a 1960's Rockwell 11 x 35 lathe and a little Harbor freight "drill/mill" that they don't sell anymore.

I just found out about this community workshop 5 miles from me. If I join it might help curb my own tool purchasing affliction. Foothills Community Workshop | A Hackerspace for the NC Foothills

PM is a 'pro' site and we seldom discuss our Chinese machines there, but ... there's a lot of help there if you need it regarding the work we do on 'em. Lots of non-journeymen with garage shops, etc discuss operating vs servicing these.

I get good service/support/parts from Grizzly for my HFT 12" x 36" doppleganger, not to mention for the smaller G9972Z lathe and G0619 Mill that I actually bought from them. ;) IMO the G4003 is a respectable lathe, esp for the $$ and I'd recommend it for light-med work.

Best if you don't go in blind. Have someone with lathe experience show you the basics, and get lube/maint details from the OM. (Make a copy of the speeds/feed chart there and keep it handy.) A dedicated 220v 20A service is plenty for power. (NEMA 6-20, etc) PM me anytime (anybody) for help with gib adjustment removing backlash from cross-feed & compound, or other mechanical issues/questions.

SA, there are others who are members both here and on PM, so consider either site if you get in a jam. You've helped us, so we'll help you whenever. Have fun makin' chips! tog
