New toy on it's way. Ordered this lathe, and stand. The stand won't be available for pickup until April 16th. Either the Long Shore men's slow down has them stuck on the dock:rolleyes:. Or those Asian kids are getting unionized!:D I've never run a lathe before. Installed several over the years, but never run one. Should be fun to learn how.:cool2:[/url]

Nice SA! After all those years of adding material, cutting some away might be real fun:laughing: It seem's that once you get a new tool, it doesn't take long to wonder how you ever "got by" without it!

Gotta show pics of my toys, 15 X 54 Cincinnati Hydra-shift Lathe, 50 ton and 35 ton Scotchman Ironworkers!! I also have a small 9 X 20 Atlas Lathe.
Two web sites- Practical Machinist - Largest Manufacturing Technology Forum on the Web
and- http://www.homeshopmachinist.net/home
Both sites are great but the first site owner is a real butt and won't let ANY discussion about Chinese machine tools!
Two things you must learn with a lathe.
1. Be very careful moving one! There are so many stories and pics of them falling on their face and busting the control handles or worse.
2. Don't do the other kind of crash, run the tool into the spinning chuck.
All of the above tools are very handy when I need them.

Interested in Sawmills? lol

My latest build is a Sawmill Trailer.
Could have used this "new" baby though.
I'm in the middle of another Sawmill trailer build and don't have time to go pick it up even though it's paid for.

Curious why you didn't cope the angle iron and weld it on the vertical portion as well?

Have a lower cost Enco lathe and Mill that I enjoy But I
would love to own that Saw Mill Trailer.. Man I would like to have one of those.Back in the day I used to make all sizes of band saw blades on a Lennox band saw welder. Did a few favors for the mill guys and they would cut me some oak and cherry lumber.

Curious why you didn't cope the angle iron and weld it on the vertical portion as well?
Several reasons.
1) The track wheels have to pass through so there is a 3/4" gap on each side to allow wheels and whatever else is needed to pass through.
2) The track must remain true. Welding vertically would only draw the track out of line at each weld point. Plus that much weld simply is not needed to keep it together.
3) Coping takes up too much labor and time. Not practical or cost efficient. And makes it weaker overall.
4) The ends of the track is meant to be added on to if necessary with a 4 ft extension. Making the ends different would result in this being impossible
5) The log bunk angle must sit on top of the other track angles so that it raises it up 1/4" above the track so the mill can cut down to a minimum 1" height and makes removing the boards/cant easier with a forklift or other similar tool .
6) This matches the factory construction method of track. Easy to square and make everything true with jigs. (which I made up rudimentary ones to assemble the track square and true).

You'll love it. Back when I worked in a machine shop during college, I got to be real handy with the lathes and made tons of stuff (even made a new turn-signal lever for my car once, when the original snapped off). Also got good on the Bridgeport machines. I'd love to have one of each in my workshop someday.

About 3-4 times a year, I think of a need for a lathe or milling machine. More often the lathe. Been tempted to get a small bench lathe many times, but will probably wait until I can justify a bigger unit like you picked out.

I got this HF Saw Mill about a year ago and made an extension for it. It will cut a 9.5' log and I wanted to be able to cut a 16'er.
They have this mill on sale all the time for $1900. I used a 25% off coupon and got it delivered for $1607. but they stopped the coupon on the mills now.
It has about a 10 hp Honda knock-off engine and does a great job!!

SA

I find myself in Springfield MO several times per year, location of one the three Grizzly warehouses. If I have extra time, I will go to their showroom and drool. I am more into woodworking, but many many times I have almost come home with a lathe or mill. Problem is the selection is huge and I can't decide what to buy!!

Enjoy your new tool! You deserve it!!

PS - to those unaware - they have a fantastically huge catalogue that's free for the asking. Tools tools and more tools!!!
