110 John Deere TLB
Have a 110 John Deere tlb backhoe what is the best grease to use for all the pivot points. The manual says to use a all purpose NLGI grade NO#2 or a high temp EP grease. But I can buy a $5.00 to $12'00 tube saying the same thing. I thought of using Lucas X-TRA heavy duty grease
Any thoughts live in Ont Canada

You definitely want EP or EP2 rated grease. It is made to take the pressures of such things. I generally get the heavy duty black stuff from tractor supply for my hoe and loader.

I buy Mobil CMS from the jobber.

I use what I have around. Grease more often, and don't buy the expensive stuff... [ grease pushing the sand/grit out ] A lot of pro's use Texas Refinery red grease called #880 Crown and Chassis Lubricant. I have used that, too.... but only when they give it to me... :)

Agree, to grease correctly you need to pump out all the old grease, so that is going to be a lot of grease. On your hoe or any equipment for that matter, key to greasing is getting it positioned so there is no load on the pin and you can get grease all the way around. When I grease my hoe correctly i'll go through at least 2 tube of grease. Cost effective EP grease high temp I'm spending about $3.00

go to CTC and pick up a tube of any MOLY based grease ( about 5 - 6 .00 a tube CDN ) used for CV joints ...

Agree with jaotguy. Best is lube with 5% moly, but 3% is more common and will do the job. Moly is the black sticky stuff and just like the excess that you squeeze out of the joints when you grease that is magnetically attracted to your clothes and won't wash out, it sticks in the joints you lube.

I am on the moly wagon also. I use Schaeffer 238 or 274 grease for all my needs. Schaeffer also uses a aluminized base as opposed to a lithium base. It has great pound out and water resistance and tackiness.

.
Cat & Amsoil both make a grease with high Molly content. For equipment that takes a beating, dozer, loader & backhoe pivot pins. It doesn't beat out like chassis grease. The NGIL 2 is thick and sticky. I keep 2 grease guns, 1 with Amsoil Off Road grease for the loader and automotive ball joints and steering linkage, the other with chassis lube for u-joints and general greasing of components.

Also, a snake oil that really works:

MILITEC-1 automotive and industrial grease for the ultimate protection

This stuf bonds with the surface metal and provides protection when most everything has squeezed out. I use 2 guns. Flush the joint with a cheaper grease then give a shot of the Militec-1 blended grease.

,,,,The Militec product is great at the metal to metal boundary layer -- ONLY there. Its a waste to add to an engine because there the lubrication is hydrodynamic. Literally, used right, an 8 oz bottle of the liquid can last a lifetime.

Yes you need a grease with moly for pivot pins. Don't use moly grease on bearings. There is a huge difference between the two. I keep separate grease guns one with moly (I use Schaefer 238) and the other with mystic jt6. The moly goes in the pivot points on loaders, backhoe, tie rods, etc. The mystic goes in things with bearings. The moly grease doesn't flow really well and doesn't work good for bearings. It is almost like tar and stays where you put it which makes it good for pins.

Never had a problem with general purpose grease. One grease gun, and I do it all! Never a problem even with a litle slack in pins. but, I do grease on a very regular basis. and that is at about every 10 hours of continuous work. works well for me.

If you grease a lot anything will work but grease is a fairly complicated substance. They have certain greases for things like bearings and then they have grease for things like pins where pound out is a problem. There is tremendous force on pins and grease can literally be forced or pounded out of the joint.

Now this is certainly going to make your pins and bushings last longer, but I don't use Moly grease for economic reasons. Not that the grease is expensive, the issue is that if I, or one of the dogs, tracks a blob of red multi-purpose grease into the house, I can clean it off the carpet. If a blob of Moly grease gets tracked in, my wife will insist on a new carpet.

In the grand scheme of things, replacing the carpet is a lot more expensive than replacing pins and bushings at some point in the far distant future...

I started using the Mystic grease (clear color) for the very reason of getting rid of the black blobs that get everywhere from the moly. I have found that it is very difficult to get off your hands so it should stick to the steel just as well. With the moly grease, you can remove the greasy film by just wiping with a rag, but not the Mystic. It takes a healthy glob of Orange goop to get it off so it is pretty well water proof also. This is just my opinion and not based on any reading material on it.

If there is a Cat dealer nearby you can pick up some of their 5% MOLY. Im no lover of Cat in general but that is really good grease for pins and slow moving parts. Sticks well and repels water. JD's 3% HD moly grease is decent too, especially if its available local.
