Eric, you do have a farm cat don't you? My Gray2 (gray farm cat) keeps the mouse, rat, rabbit, bird and squirrel population down even though I feed him three times a day. He eats everything except the liver on mice, feathers on birds and heads on squirrels.
You are fortunate to have a good farm cat. Most of our animal feed is kept in a barn a good 250 yds or more away from the house. That gets patrolled by both cats and stoats and they do a pretty good job. Closer by we have a neighbour with lots of pet animals - pet dogs, pet sheep, pet pigs, pet goates etc and rats get attracted by the food.
We used to have a cat we called Thomas, with very similar marking to the cartoon Tom & Jerry. He was a good mouser. Only trouble was he was so proud of every mouse he caught, he would often bring inside his captives, dead or alive, to show everyone. All the family were sad when he died at a good old age, but didn't miss the "he must have left a mouse somewhere" odour.
