What do you do for vacation

We've rented a house in Nag's Head, SC. $1200 for the week for 7 people. Four blocks from the beach. Day trips to the light house, Kitty Hawk, etc... nice beaches. Not too crowded during the week. It was very relaxing.

Rent a cabin at a state park for a week.

Take a drive out west. South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana are packed. You can easily spend a week doing day trips out of just Rapid City, SD.

I'd skip the Smokey Mountains/Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area. Been there 6-7 times. Its just too crowded now. Really crowded. Too commercialized everywhere. Maybe go in the off season, but never again in the summer months.

Can't beat Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, OH. Unbelievable amount of roller coasters! Stop by the Weenie Hut in Sandusky for dogs. Mmmmm!!!

There's something about sitting on my porch, looking at the trees, listening to the birds, watching the turkeys and deer pass thru, with my dog at my side.

That is my kind of plan :) We're in the process of building our retirement home in the center of our 110 acres. We'll have 2 18' vaulted porches, front and rear, and a screened in porch to escape the bugs when needed.

My wife has been overseas several times but I'm just domestic. She wants to return to Italy and spend a few weeks - so after our home is complete we'll likely plan that trip.

You've reminded me of a good point. National parks [and parts of the Appalachian Trail] et al are really crowded. But there are lots of state parks with great scenery and great trails. Most western states have parks with mountains that look just like those of the big parks. Ok, there's no old faithful, but camping, hiking and general get away are just great without the crowds and hassle.

I take a 3 week camping road trip anywhere west of the Rockies. Pics from a few weeks ago. First campsite is a spot where they filmed a scene from Rawhide. Second is Trona PinnaclesThird is an alpine lake I hiked to near Lone Pine CA last is Teakettle Junction in Death Valley. I take a dual sport motorcycle with me and love to explore.

I took my parents to Yellowstone several years ago, right after Labor Day weekend. It wasn't too bad. I have a goal of doing Yellowstone in the dead of Winter.

One of the best vacations we have had. Took a snowmobile from west yellowstone to old faithful dec 29th. Fantastic!

We spent a week in Veradero, Cuba this past April. Absolute beautiful country, took a day trip to Havana. It's like going back in time seeing all the antique cars. Great place to vacation.

Last year Karen and I where going to go to Estes Park in Colorado for a week of taking pictures of wildlife and the scenery. Estes is famous of all the elk that hang out there and we wanted to be there during the rut when the bulls are bugling. The week before we where to leave there was a huge storm there that washed out the roads and flooded a lot of the area all the way down to Denver. We canceled our plans to go there and figured we would still fly to Denver, get our rental car and just go exploring. Then the night before we where to leave, there was a huge storm here in East Texas that shut down or local airport and we woke up to finding out our flight had been canceled.

It was 530 in the morning when I got that email and I spent the next hour booking a new flight out of Dallas to Billings MT, getting a new car rental and finding a hotel for us to stay just outside of Yellowstone for 4 days and one close to Mt Rushmore for 3 days. We made it to DFW just in time, and we had to actually run through the airport in Minneapolis to make our connection to Billings, which we did, and in the end, it worked out perfectly!!!

That turned out to be one of the best trips ever. We saw more animals then I have ever saw in the park, including black and grizzly bears. Plus the elk where in full rut and bugling like crazy!!! Same thing with the Mt Rushmore area, it was all just perfect and one of those trips that was never planed, but just sort of happened at the last minute that made every day a surprise adventure!!!

Eddie, those spontaneous trips are the best. If left up to me, that's how we roll. I don't make reservations. But then we are usually travelling off the beaten path.

Yellowstone is something everyone should see. Especially if you are into wildlife.

We came into Yellowstone at the south end and drove thru the park to Mammoth Springs at the North end to camp the first night. We saw Elk, Moose and Buffalo all day. Once we even had to stop because the road was full of Elk. My folks had never saw Elk or Moose. They were in awe and took hundreds of pictures. That evening we were eating at a picnic table in the campground and a young couple set up a tent next to us. My Dad started visiting with them, they had just entered the park from the North end. He asked them if they had saw any Elk and they said no but they hoped they would. He said well there's one standing right over there and pointed to a large cow about 100 yards away. The man said quick get the camera and they ran off to get a picture all excited!!! Dad said "that was us this morning" and we went on eating. :D

We went in late September because I wanted to be there when the elk where in the rut and bugling. There is nothing that compares to the sound they make and seeing the big bulls heard up the cows and run off the other bulls. We still want to go to Estes Park during this time to see the elk there during the rut. To me, there just isn't another time of the year that comes close to being as good as late September for going there!!!!!
