Tundra vs. Chevy

Yeah it did do that Fordman. I only took an interest in that it was supposedly a play by play tear down of a motor that had been documented as actually turning over 1 million by a reputable tech school. While I am sure Schaefer was really on top of this, the tech school itself had their reputation on the line, so it seemed more legit that some of the infomercial stuff. But it sure had that appearance with the constant reference to Schaeffer oil. But who knows, it might have been a slight of hand sort of thing and not truly legit. I guess we'll never truly know.

I can believe the Tacoma taking a top spot. Just in what I have seen over the years, that little pickup just keeps going and going. It has to be darn near the most reliable in it's class. I sure would take a serious look at it if it would fit what I needed. Not sure the Tundra can quite make the same claim. While resale value may be there, that could be influenced by the carry over reputation Toyota has with the afore mentioned Tacoma.

I am looking hard at a new Tacoma now, a pre-runner access cab 4cyl auto 2wd. It will be my everyday vehicle, replacing my 97 F150 that is basically just worn out. My wife and I bought a 2013 Tundra and really like it. She hauls the kids in it and we do some towing now and then. It is a 2wd crew max with the 5.7, 4.30 gears. We average 17-18mpg with it. We had Chevy's before, but find the Toyotas to be a little better quality and hold their value much better. The customer service is also outstanding.

If you can, test drive the manual with the 4cyl too. I hear it makes more use of the power than the 4 speed auto does.

I am thinking similar things now with 4wd, V6, etc but also like the 4 cylinder Tundra. Be careful, the 4wd won't tow very much if anything.

OOPS--Make that 4 cyl Tacoma

I used to buy nothing but 4wd trucks, but really never used it. If I get stuck on my place, which is really the only place I go off road, I have a tractor and/or dozer to pull me out. I try to keep my trucks simple now, less things to fail.

I will look into it, but my wife is shakey with a manual. Need to keep her happy-happy wife happy life!! She won't be driving it much, but if she has to I want her to be able to go with confidence.

never heard of one, and can''t imagine there is one. 6 cyl, yes, 4 cyl, no.

I am sure he meant Tacoma. Toyota is discontinuing the 6 cylinder in the Tundra.

I will put my 2012 EcoBoost against my old 99 F350 any day of the week in every way other than payload. That includes towing a 10,000# trailer, stopping that trailer, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph with that trailer, passing someone from 60 to say 75 mph, and over control and stability of the load.

Chris

Cue video.

10,000 pounds and a 3.55 rear end.

Wow,I never tow going 75-80 mph.Takes to long to get it stopped if something goes wrong.

Yeap. I am more the 65 MPH type on an interstate in good conditions and less on other roads.

Thanks for the video. Now please focus on your driving. Going 75mph with a supposed 10k pound load and filming is a recipe for disaster.

One thing that amazes me about the EB is how quiet it is. I mean, it is eerily quiet when idling.

Yes it is. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges but towing a 10,000# load in my EB is smooth and quite. In my 03 Ram Hemi it would turn about 4000 rpm and I was yelling to talk to my wife sitting next to me.

Trucks sure have come a long way.

The 2015 Ford EB and the GM 1500s are very nice trucks that I have recently test driven. However, I really like the sound of the diesel. I test drove a 2006 F250 6.0L diesel earlier this week and the engine sound was music to my ears, in that relatively quiet cabin. There is just something that keeps pulling me towards the brawniness of a diesel 3/4 ton truck. And in this case there is an overlap of uses and either could satisfy my needs.

In my opinion, the 6.0 diesel was the best sounding diesel out there. I had 2, hard to keep my foot out the go pedal!

My 05 Z71 had the same issue. Pulled the load but screamed the whole way. The new trucks are MUCH better at towing.

You tell me: what do you think this weighs?

Towing with the best half ton for towing is not dramatic and neither is stopping. The truck drives smooth, the load is positioned correctly, and the radial tow tires are rated for the speed and load.

Anyway, I set down my sandwich and made this video and then put down my phone and picked up the sandwich.

I wasn't scar't at all and neither should you. :)
