Some people might not like this but I didn't get my CHL to protect others just the family and me. Not only the emotional price to pay but financial ruin.

Some very good posts fellas.

RSKY, glad to see you are back. Obviously you feel like there is something to learn/gain by being a part of this conversation. Hang in there. And study the posts carefully before responding. I haven't saw anyone attacking you or trying to scare you in this thread. It's all about broadening one's perspective.

An example would be Larry's comment about no knowing anyone packing a gun for the purpose of shooting someone. Make no mistake, that is exactly why the Wolf is packing. Understand the Sheep Dog is packing to defend himself against that threat.

Sodo made so many profound statements I lost count. I reread his posts several times so I would completely digest what he is saying. I'll let him decide whether to answer this question or not, no hard feelings either way. How many times in the line of duty during your career did you have to draw your loaded weapon on a human with intent to pull the trigger if needed? How many times did you pull the trigger? This point isn't to judge Sodo, it's to make the point that LEOs MUST train often so when the rare time comes for action they can react with trained reflex rather than shaky hands.

Murph, I totally understand and agree with your statement. Knowing that about yourself makes you a much more effective carrier. A person should never, under any circumstances, draw their weapon unless they fully intend to use it. In your case, if the situation does not meet your standard for action, everyone around is better off for you to do nothing. Otherwise the Sheep Dog in the fray has to sort out what your intentions are with the gun in your hand. While he's doing that he's attacked by the Wolf. And trust me on this, if the Wolf is effective in his role, he already knows your limits.

I'll go back to a previous point I made. It is extremely critical for each of us to fully understand where we belong in society, Wolf, Sheep or Sheep Dog. The Sheep Dog's chances of success increase dramatically when the Sheep get out of the way.

Good stuff here guys. Stuff we can all take away from this discussion and apply in our lives. Some small thing learned here might help you someday.

Two comments, let me clarify my statement, I dealt with Wolves every day for over thirty years, so obviously I knew many who carried with ill intent, I should have said who legally carry ie. CCW or LEO.

The second is, I couldn't agree more about the Wolf's ability to assess threat levels, if they can't they don't last long.

The Wolf has original intent of doing harm. The Sheep and Sheep Dog are reacting to that action. We start out with a serious disadvantage.

Some people call that being behind the curve, or behind the 8 ball. But sometimes ole Wolfy does not expect a "sheep" to turn and bite him on the haunches either. Wolves can be surprised. But if the sheep go around in "condition white" all the time, they will never even see danger coming at all. It has a lot to do with that "denial of Wolf" thing. A lot of people just go through life thinking good thoughts all the time..

Once again James, your intelligent perception and diagnosis of human behavior impresses me. :)

I would enjoy meeting you sometime Richard, I think we would find a lot in common. I have never served in the military, but I did spend some time as a deputy Sheriff when I was very young. That was a real eye opener.. I would recommend anyone do that for a while. It gives you a new outlook on life.:) But hey, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger right?

Our training used Jeff Cooper's condition white, yellow, orange and red. For the right person, if practiced long enough it becomes natural.

While the Sheep, Wolf and Sheep Dog are pretty good ways of differentiating between the types, some will take offense, considering Sheep in particular objectionable, no one likes to be thought of as a Sheep and will reject the whole concept.

While some characteristics are, I believe, innate, some are not and many of us can and will be at least two and even a few I've known all three. I was definitely a Sheep for a couple of years for a variety of reasons until a Wolf again crossed my path; never again.

I was thinking about that same thing yesterday while working on a building. I certainly don't mean to offend anyone with terminology. But I also couldn't come up with anything less offensive that so accurately described the situation. Myself, I never think of the term sheep as demeaning. I think of it as a description of a personality type.

I also agree that people can switch roles throughout their lives. I've witnessed this with my Soldiers. I always considered it critically important to fully understand each Soldier's capabilities and their personal category. An intense life threatening situation often triggered a change in the less aggressive personalities.

I doubt any of us could come up with analogies someone would not consider offensive or denigrating and to really encompass all personality types you would wind up with something too cumbersome to be of worth as a quick reference.
