My TV has died.

The whole Digital conversion has not been bad... bought mom a $20 converter box from Radio Shack with FCC coupon.

Her Rabbit Ears had never pulled in many stations with analog... she's at 50+ stations with the 1960's rabbit ears sitting on top of the set and converter box... the placement has to be precise... even moving and inch or two can lose the picture.

Of the 50+ stations... many are foreign language... still plenty to choose from.

I still have a small black and white TV in the garage... have not used it since the conversion... of course it is a Zenith too...

Family is like that... we all bought Zenith for TV... Electrolux for Vacuums, Amana for Refrigerators, Kenmore for Washer/Dryer... etc... these were all bought in the 1960's without incident...

Grandma's 1950 Kelvinator and 1930 Electrolux are still going strong!

America really built quality long lasting appliances/electronics and the proof is in my parent's home.

We had a power outage here tonight and now my TV (a Curtis Mathes) won't power up any more.

May your Curtis Mathes RIP ... it served you well but the time has come to let it go. Get a Sony or Samsung 1080P big screen and enjoy.

And disposing of them even costs money nowadays in many places

The Salvation Army accepts dead electronics in a lot of places. Or you could just be like everyone else and dump it off on some backroad.

Just make sure it isn't on land belonging to a fellow TBN member, I don't think there is a forum for that kind of thing. :D

You obviously have internet. Is it DSL or FIOS? Try Netflix. Or, why not Dish or DirecTV?

It's my employer's "smart phone". My other option is dial-up, although I'm considering satellite.

I don't watch enough TV to pay for it, and as somebody else mentioned if I"m in a motel or someplace with TV I generally flip through the channels and shut it off; or lose interst during the first onslaught of commercials.

Didn't know they still had dial-up. Haven't used dial-up since 1998.

In my Washington location... either Dial Up or Satellite...

No Cell or Cable... and I'm only 15 minutes from the State Capital!

You might be surprised at how much better you feel if you dont have that daily dose of TV indoctrination.

Dang, I hope my 25 year old JVC tube TV isn't next. Before that it was a Sony the wife had to get up and change the channels on.

I don't know that I would notice if the JVC died, unless the wife said something. I know a couple of things about TV. The first is that Monday night football is on Monday night. The second is that Andy Rooney is on 60 Minutes is on Sunday night. That is as much as I know about TV.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, Andy Rooney has passed away (in November of 2011).

Are you joking? The "last television set made in America" and you still had one? OK, here's the deal: Curtis Mathes went out of business years ago so your choices are Japanese (even they outsource a bunch of components to China), Korean (LG same company as LS tractors), or Chinese.

Mace is Canadian, they're all imports to him.

Well, then I guess there is only one thing remaining that I know about TV. Thank God for football.

I had a few 27" CRT models to dispose of. Goodwill here no longer accepts them, and local SA has a cut-off date of manufacture (~10 yrs old, or so). Turns out Best Buy (they rarely are) would take them back without me having to pay them. I wheeled them in the door and was sent to the service desk. Receipt says 'Electronic Take Back' for each.

I suppose BB gets some kind of credit to steer these oldies from the std waste stream, my own goal to a 'T'. btw, I have a 32' Sanyo, a nice Sears 27" (on a cart with dusty game consoles, I'm 65) a 20", 3 12", all CRT sets, and a 20" LCD my neighbor found on the curb. IIRC one of the teeny ones, or the LCD is connected to a DVD player. Maybe around Christmas time I'll look & see which one it is.

Dealing with Comcast can be a bear when you only want internet & don't stream anything to watch. (I like to read :))

IMO, life is too short to watch television! tog
