70 with 91 promised this afternoon and 80% chance of heavy rain tonight. I guess TS Bill is almost here.

Drew, good luck with the boat transaction.

I admire you guys that work on firewood in the summer. Too hot for me.

Took my wife to a beautiful winery yesterday near Madison to meet my son and GF for lunch...celebrated the 2 ladies' birthdays. Then to the Mennonite store to buy some yummy jams and breads. Picked up a new 2-person porch swing that I promised her for Mother's Day.

I've got some tilling to do, but may put some of it off due to the washout expected. Instead, still have more mowing to do.

Good Morning. First cup of coffee in hand. Going to get on the bike for a ride early. Then it's weed eating and mower time (walk behind) for a bit, followed by moving a fence line and installing a new gate. Then more mower time (pasture shredder) for a bit. Then eat, sleep, repeat.

Drew: Good Luck with the boat purchase. She's a beauty. That's a very kind gesture to give your brother and his family your old boat.

RonJHall: Hope you had a great birthday. Enjoy your next trip around the sun!

Farmer2009: Missed your anniversary. Hope you have many many more.

69F now, with more sunshine today. High 97F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph.

RS, that's some pretty straight saw work on those big rounds! But just watching that noodling video made my back sore! If you do end up replacing a furnace, you may get a summer discount? Bummer you have to replace the other sprockets as well, but the new chain'll last a bit longer that way. I still remember the day tornadoes destroyed Zenia. Very scary hearing the tornado warnings on TV, then going outside to the very dark sky and huge lightning bolts. Those storm cells never made as far east to Columbus, at least on that day.

Farmer, three beef cows at once! What a loss. But that's what insurance is for, right? Good luck riding out the new storm.

Drew, good luck on the offer. You got one of those hats with the scrambled eggs on the front?

Jumped on the RTV right after breakfast yesterday, all set to make another start on the weed spraying. 'Cept it cranked much slower than usual, so I let it run while I mixed the tank. Ran it out no problem, but when I came back for the next refill, I thought I'd better stop the engine and restart it to make sure it would go. It just went click, click, click. Battery was dead. Either the new pump is pulling way more current than the old one, or the fuzz on the terminals is keeping the charge out of the battery. Or the four year old battery is dying. So I cleaned up the terminals, tightened the clamps, and shot everything with a good dose of LPS 3. Then put it on a charger. I'll load test it later today and see.

By then it was too hot to spray, so switched over to putting the driving lights off the old bike onto the for sale bike. Paid better attention this time so there were no shorts, and finished up with a few other things that needed taken care of prior to getting rid of it. Now it's just waiting on the dealer to call and say they're ready to perform the recall work.:censored:

Today I was supposed to head over to a friend's place near Lake Tahoe for another motorcycle wrenching party (Airhead tech day), but my traveling companion called last night to say he'd mixed up the dates and couldn't go. At about the same time another buddy, who I haven't seen in a few years, let me know he'd be in the next burg over showing off a new to him Olds 442 at a car show, and he'd have an extra chair for me if I wanted to wander over for a look see. So that's the new plan for today.

Stay cool everybody, and have a great weekend!

Kyle, Sorry about the Uncle, he is in a better place.
Roy, glad you got well.
Ron, Happy Belated Birthday!
Drew, good on you for the decision about which "hole in the water you throw money into" for yourself & for your brother.
Farmer, Happy anniversary!

I can't seem to keep up here, I feel like a lurker, or one of those "Long time listener, first time caller" types...

Logging is done, 3 pt lost a pin, bought a log splitter, Thinking about selling my FarmBoss MS290 and buying a Stihl pro MS261 from a TBN'r, gonna buy an Echo cs400 smaller saw also. Thinking about marrying my girlfriend (no jokes please, she is pretty awesome), my Ex is messing with me (can't talk about it, but likely to end up in court) and I'm not getting access to my kids AGAIN... Sigh I seem to be the Drama Lama here so it is likely best I'm not on here daily anymore.

As the saying goes, "That which does not kill you..." and I ain't dead yet...

I hope God richly blesses ALL of y'all.
Be well my friends. I'll be lurking when I can. (BTW - I almost NEVER gt a TBN email thread update anymore).

Thank you all for the condolences. It was a good memorial service celebrating his life. His employer had continued to pay him full pay for the last 3 years of his life, even though he was down and hospitalized for a good bit of it. One of the owners of his job came from Oklahoma and was sincerely grateful for having known Uncle Terry.

Whatever company that was Uncle Terry worked for I would HAPPILY buy from them. You do not hear stories like that often. Impressive.
Uncle Terry must have been a fine person!

Be well,

73 this morning and headed to 86 today. Ended up with about .75 inches of rain out of Bill last night. Far below predictions. But that's fine. Radar shows center of rotation just southeast of Louisville, Kentucky. Looks like maybe it has turned more eastward. For a storm like that to be this far inland it's still fairly well organized. I remember another one making it this far. Forgot it's name but back about 08 or 09. We had one that still almost had hurricane force winds when it got here. But was a dry storm. Only wind no rain.

Thanks guys for the anniversary wishes.

MFW. Congrats on your new girlfriend. Nothing wrong with slow though. Sorry to hear your still having trouble with the ex. But that may never end. Good luck getting kids back.
I have a CS400 with an 18" bar. Good little saw but if I had a do over I would look at the Timberwolf version. It wasn't out when I bought mine. But mine does everything I need an 18" saw to do. Been times I've needed a bigger saw and I just call dad or a friend. But nice and light for bucking but yet enough power for felling.

back in for a shirt swap. And a cleanup to get the orchard spray off. Bummer, the little Honda GCV160 engine would not run worth beans, acted like something was clogged in the carb, no rpm, and even when manually sped up it was not happy.
Probably build goop somewhere it should not be but a real pita for me to get it fixed. So out came the three gallon hand sprayer and I lugged that all over the place. Got that done, not being pleased to see an 8th tree croaked and all three of my first gen apples were gone. Not a trace. Must be birds. Not like I want to lay bird netting over that whole thing. But the birds here are voracious; they are finding the gaps in my blueberry netting and each day there are less berries. Despite being well fed by me with sunflowers and treats. Not getting much respect here, said Rodney...

Back to mow the field, then drop that mower off, put on the heavy bush hog, and have that ready for the Kubota dealer to pick up on Tuesday to sell. I have no use for that mower now that I have a finishing mower. RCF084 Land Pride, nice cutter.
I know I could pick up the rotary cutter with the forks, but seems easier to just attach it to the three point and have the truck driver back it onto his trailer and drop it. Their problem getting it off. My deal to go wax it and make it sales ready. And while I have the finish mower off, I'm going to grease those universal joints I've been having problems getting to.
Then likely a shower, and escape to the woodshop for the afternoon and have a cold beer or two.

Good morning,

What a night. We got hit by a thunderstorm that snuck up on us in minutes. It dumped over 2 1/2 inches of rain on us within an hour. My outbuilding where I house my dogs was two inches under water. Luck would have it, that it is the old milk house. Of course the drains are suspect being close to 100 years old. I had to let the dogs go find a dry spot in the barn, which was also taking on water. It was a crazy amount. NEVER seen so much so fast in THIS area. I ended up digging with a shovel on an outside corner of the milk house just to move water away from the entrances. Then I took a broom and moved the water back out the way it came in. Crazy! I found the drains after moving most of the water out and just tried to clear them as best I could. We set some fans up in there and let the dogs decide where they wanted to go for the night.

This AM I am taking stock of the place, the pool needs to be drained, and I got a lot of mud and crap on most of our walkways. The hay that was cut in the fields needs to be turned too.

Mother nature sure can throw some nasty weather around. And this was nothing to what others have had to deal with this year.

Be safe everyone, enjoy the weekend. Happy fathers day to all the dads.

riptides, sorry you got dumped on. Thunderstorms are popping up right now around here and those are the kind of downpours happening here that have killed my fruit trees and half my vegetable garden. Sorry they made a mess at your place. What ever happened to a nice slow soaking rain? Instead, we have torrential downpours that I thought once only happened in the tropics. And the Gulf of Mexico is now a birthing location for one set of storms after another. When I lived in South Florida for three years, I expected those downpours. They seem to be moving North. Though I bet Larro is in for one after another most of the summer. Too much heat, too much humidity, things are going to pop. 102 heat index out right now.
Well, the lawn sure likes it. Of course half my seed went into the river on the last dump and flush.

Worked really hard today out in the heat and despite going slow, went through two sets of clothes totally soaked. So I drank one of those sports drinks, orange something, large plastic bottle and it was somewhat thick but ok ice cold. Probably did some good.
Then drank more water, a beer, and now a cup of coffee. And haven't had to go to the bathroom which tells me keep drinking.

Just heard thunder. Put the patio umbrella down just in case. I lost the last one last fall when it Mary Poppins'd on me and flew thirty feet to crash in a flower bed. All hands were lost...trying to be more careful with the replacement.

I think it's time for a movie. That's my adventure, may yours be more interesting.

72F and cloudy with a light mist/drizzle @ 15:30 ... looks like we are just on the top edge of all the precip, with most of it passing south of us.

Fine by me ... we're within 0.25" of the normal YTD rainfall at this point.

Probably no shot at mowing until at least Monday.

... RS & riptides those are some massive rounds to work with. The curse of free large tree firewood. :)
Yup ...

Nice that there is a lot of wood there, but handling it is a real treat to be sure ...

... Being a wood turner, you guys are killing me with those big rounds for firewood. So Rswyan, how close are you to Walnut Creek? Wife and I are going up there right after the 4th to an Amish school.
About 35 miles/50 minutes (back roads) ...

Wonder if I can get one of those big rounds in her Nissan?
Might make it sit a little low :D

Enjoy your trip to the Buckeye ...

... I admire you guys that work on firewood in the summer. Too hot for me.
Been lucky here for the most part ... hasn't been all that hot yet, except for a few days where the temps were above normal ...

As long as the humidity isn't too high when it's hot, I can deal with it ... up to a point. Been trying to make a point of working on cloudy days ... makes a huge difference.

Glad you were able to spend some QT with the woman and family

... RS, that's some pretty straight saw work on those big rounds!
Yeah ... I was even impressed myself ... lol ...

Makes a good case for a chain sharpener, where one can control the depth, angle, and cut on each tooth for repeatability, so the saw will track straight in the cut.

Not all of the cuts were that straight though ... probably due to hitting dirt/gravel and just because of the surface on the log (not near being round in some spots)

But just watching that noodling video made my back sore!
LOL ... yeah, I won't be looking to do any more of it than I absolutely have to.

If you do end up replacing a furnace, you may get a summer discount?
Maybe ...

Bummer you have to replace the other sprockets as well, but the new chain'll last a bit longer that way.
Yup it is ... but like you say, it makes sense to do it, from the standpoint of longevity for all the components.

I still remember the day tornadoes destroyed Zenia. Very scary hearing the tornado warnings on TV, then going outside to the very dark sky and huge lightning bolts. Those storm cells never made as far east to Columbus, at least on that day.
I'd imagine so.

I was sitting on the couch the other day when these blew through ... the winds were so strong that I was sure that it was going to take down some big limbs here at the house but it never did.

Good luck on the battery ...

Good Afternoon. 1710, partly cloudy, 92F {100F heat index} with 51% humidity. Forecast high of 94F with 30% chance of rain today, and a low of 76F tonight.

I have a wedding reception at work tonight. They got married on the banks of the Apalachicola River, and are just getting here for the reception. Judging by the name on the contract, it's the son of one of the fellows I used to run with before I stepped on the straight and narrow. If I had to guess, I would guess a few cold beer will get drank here tonight.

Kyle, sorry to hear about your uncle. It sounds like he was a good man, and greatly valued by those who knew him.

The rain has been dodging me for the last couple three weeks. There has been showers all around, but none on my garden. Every other day I run the sprinklers on the melons, squash and cucumbers for an hour, then the soaker hoses for two hours on the rest. Often the Dog Days {7-16 through 8-24} is when we get one heavy rain after the other. When it doesn't come then, it really dries up around here.

94F, feels like 91F with 19% humidity and clear sunny skies.

Load tested the battery from the RTV this morning, twice, and it checked out just fine. Now I'm thinkin' that the alternator on the RTV isn't keeping up with the pump motor on the sprayer. So I'll either need to go faster to keep the RPMs up, or maybe check the output on the alternator. Maybe I should check the alternator first; don't want to be running off over any cliffs trying to keep the battery charged

Spent a few hours at the car show this afternoon, meeting up with an old friend and a few of his buddies. They'd driven an hour and a half to get there and all seemed to enjoy the ride down the canyon. There were about a hundred cars there, mostly '50s and '60s hot rods, but a few from the '30s and '20s as well. Most of the owners were 50+ with gray hair and pot bellies galore. so I fit right in. We had a pleasant spot in the shade, but right next to the PA system. Nice if you like '50s rock'n'roll, not so much if you're trying to gab. So we walked around looking at the cars a bit, then headed over to the adjacent senior center for a sandwich. They were playing an old Chevrolet promotional movie that compared the cars of the day, pretty funny.

When I got home I found that a pair of barn swallows had made a muddy mess on the front porch building what looks like to be the start of a nest. I'm all for the birds and the bees, as long as they do it somewhere else. So I guess I'll be on garden hose patrol the next few days until they get tired of rebuilding it.

Right now me thinks it's time for a couple cold ones on the back porch; it's that kind of an afternoon. :drink:

Got the drive wheels, drum/sprockets, and jackshafts pulled on the Simplicity.

After having a look at the teeth on a new Browning 72 tooth plate sprocket (courtesy of Amazon) and checking the old wheel sprockets by placing a length of new chain on them, I've decided I'm not going to replace them - the teeth don't appear to be all that worn and the new chain fits very snugly with no back and forth movement. Add to that the wheel sprockets are part of the hub assemblies and are not easily removable (major machining to R and R) ... plus there are other issues to handle (aka spend money on):

The drums fit onto a pair of Eaton combo hydraulic pumps/motors and are retained by a pair of external snap rings. The drums are prevented from spinning on the shafts of the hydraulic pumps/motors by a woodruff key. The woodruff keys are shot and the slots in the shaft of the hydraulic pumps/motors where the woodruff keys fit are pretty wallowed out.

So ... I might be looking at having to tack weld the woodruff keys onto the shafts to get them where they aren't flopping around.

Next item are the two jackshafts ... each of these ride in a pair of sealed bearings ... one side is certainly shot (bearings are dry and feel rough when spun) ... and the other side is noisy ... but that might only be a washer on the retaining bolt that's spinning/rubbing. Will know more when I get the jackshafts pulled out of the bearing/hub assemblies.

And so it goes ...
