What about two single phase transformers wired in an open delta configuration? In my Younger day (1950s) this was a common way to power 3 phase air conditioning in residential areas the had only singe phase distribution systems. There is a 30% loss factor if I remember right.

Single phase is the standard over here, usually 240v. Do you have 3ph in your homes in Norway? What voltage?

Muddstopper, what are the three motors you need to drive on your mill? Obviously you have your spindle motor and probably a coolant motor, but the 3rd one is maybe a table drive? Reason I'm asking is you might want to look into a VFD. I use them on both my lathes but I only drive the spindle motor and don't use the coolant motors (removed them). For what I use them for, I can just manually apply coolant. I know a lot of hobbyists use the TECO brand VFD's because of the price and they are very happy with them.

But do they not build 3 phase in new areas? must give a very heavy load on that singel phase that feeds an area?

/edit - I can't get into machinist stuff. I've only got about 5,000 sq feet and it's about full already.

I just wish I had 5000sqft. My shop is only 900sqft and its full. Lathe and bandsaw take up a lot of space. One drill press sets in the middle of the floor and the other sets on a bench and chop saw on the other end of same bench, with Air compressor under the bench. Throw in a barrel stove in the corner, two sets of cutting torches, two welders and a plasma cutter and I have to pick a path to walk thru. I have a stainless table that catches junk that will have to go if I get the mill.

As Kenny noted VFD's are great, but if you have multiple motors on your mill the others won't work. Can you post a pic of it?
We have 2 bridgeport copys at work. Both have been adapted to VFD's for the main spindle motors and I love that. They are also hooked up to 3 phase to run the X and Y feed drives. I never use the coolant on them. Don't even have coolant in the tank. Too messy. If I need coolant, I'll have a squirt bottle or use a compressed air mister.

Another reason for a VFD! Takes up hardly any room, and can be mounted on the wall or the machine.
