Man I hope some of you clutch guys can help me

Hi all,

So I'm putting the clutch job on my 1715 compact back together, and I go to install the thrust bearing and I can't remember for sure which face of the bearing goes toward the clutch. The diagram in the manual suggests that my memory is wrong. Does anyone know if the smooth face of the bearing faces the clutch? I could have sworn that this was the case until I looked at that diagram in the manual.

There should be a flat face that compresses the fingers on the pressure plate. If you hold from the inside (as if mounted) then look at the bearing and how it spins, should be fairly clear which area contacts the fingers.

Yeah, That flat face was the way I thought it should be but the diagram in the manual confused me. Thanks a bunch!!

Jones, just being **** and checking with a picture.

The new bearing is installed to the hub correctly as I see it on the right. The old bearing on the left shows the backside. Is this correct? Thanks for your input again. Also, do you know if the hub gets any kind of grease where it slides onto the hub support shaft. It appears that there was old grease on that shaft but I would expect, during assembly it, should be very minimal due to proximity to the clutch. NH manual says nothing about lubrication during assembly. Thanks again.

The repair manual that I have states "Lightly lubricate the hub splines of the transmission input shaft using a high temperature lubricant." The bearing install looks correct.
