Not to mention the uncontrollable cost of failed exhaust emissions down the road; not just GM either.

It's hard to beat the GM 5.3 if you like GM vehicles.

Compared to its competition, it would tow and get mileage like no other "compact" pickup.

I like it, and when I'm ready to buy, a crew cab model will be on top of my list.

As a Ford man the 5.3 has all in all a good piece. Little weak compared to the competition until this latest DI version. The only know issue is oil consumption on the cylinder deactivate models.

Now the 6.0 is a beast. To me it's the best gas motor GM has built for a truck. Dead reliable, good grunt, and HP to keep it from being a dog on the highway and hills.

Exactly right Crashz............unfortunately there will always be Ford fans that want to incorrectly compare it to full size trucks ...........essentailly to bash GM and Ram wherever they can . There are all sorts of truck customers out there that don't do massive pulling or carrying, but need that pickup box and frugal fuel use engine.

Oh and re post 13 ... there is no oil consumption in the GM 5.3 2014 that has cylinder deactivation that I and many others own in my circle......but typical reply from our resident Ford fan !

Not so sure about that with only 181 HP.

It's by no means compact. My friends brother got one last month. It's bigger in e every way than his sons 1997 Silverado 4x4.

yea the new colorado is as big as 10 year old 1/2 tons. I have a 2012 colorado from work. I see no point to buying it over a 1/2 ton. A fellow employee in another state got the new colorado top of the line truck. I am anxious to compare. Mine with the 5cyl is anemic and consistently returns 16-17mpg in my real world operation and 19 on straight interstate.

About the 5.3 AFM engines. i had a freind a few years ago with 2010 model i think maybe newer? Anyway it was an oil burner. like over a qt in 60 miles towing a 5000 trailer. It was rebuilt under warrenty. He dumped that truck after cause he had no confidence in it. They told him when they turned the block over and unbolted the rods several of the pistons just fell out. And this guy is a professinal mechanic. Is a trained Kia certified mechanic but he now works at a privite independant shop. So i know he took care of the truck and did not abuse it.

That's the issue with AFM and hybrid engines, the rings stick then they burn oil.

I would say that because the Colorado engine has less torque than a V6 Tacoma (compare the HP RPM's) that it would not be the first to reach the top of a hill. The mileage came at a cost.

I test drove the Colorado before buying the Tacoma. They are very similar in terms of design and comfort in the cab. The wife thought the seats were more comfy in the Tacoma but what really swayed her was the two dinky cup holders on the console in the Colorado. Barely big enough for an eight ounce glass. Designers sometimes don't realize how important small things like this can be.

I'm glad to see that Chevy has upped its game. I am the type of person who wouldn't buy a first year model vehicle however. The Tacoma is in its final year of refinements for the current style and that's another reason I chose it. All the bugs worked out. I know, one man's bugs are another man's features.

With only 181 HP it will be another Ram Eco Diesel that just peters out while towing.

It will sell like the Eco Diesel and have 30 mpg numbers like the Eco Diesel but will get blown away by the gas motors when it comes to tugging a trailer.

Chris

Ugh! I'm sure you're right.

So, I wonder why the 2.5l gas engine (200hp) is only rated for towing 3500#, and the 2.8l diesel (181hp) is rated for 7700#?

Silverado's must have been rather narrow back in the 90's.

My v6 tacoma has less than a 100 #/ft of torque than the 2.8l duramax.

Many factors go into towing. Ability to manage heat, transmission, gear ratios, ect.

My gut is they will push the diesel by limiting the ability of the gas motor "package"

GM has only been working on this baby Dmax for a dozen years now. It better sell or it will bankrupt them!
