.22 LR Ammunition - any updates on availability?

Just wondering, these people that store up a zillion rounds of .22 or whatever...doesn't this stuff deteriorate and corrode over time due to the gunpowder? I have maybe 500 rounds just for occasional usage. I live in the woods and can walk out the backdoor anytime and shoot 'em up. I mostly just deer hunt on my property. 30-06 makes a big hole in whatever it hits...lol If I were going to stockpile something, it would be 30-30 or 30-06 not some piddling .22 I guess I just don't "get it"? :confused2:

I shoot my 10/22 a lot.. I can carry more ammo with me ,and not carry as much weight than carrying around the same amount of 30-06.. My 10/22 is fun to shoot.. I wouldn't have fun shooting a 30-06 all day

There are many schools of thought on this issue. In general ammunition can be stored for long periods of time if stored properly. As for 22 ammunition, some consider it a possible barter or trade item. This is due to the fact that it is ubiquitous ie. everyone has a 22, and a 22 is an excellent item to gather small game for a subsistence food source. .22 rounds probably won't last as long in storage as a quality lacquer sealed center fire military round, which may exceed 100 years but it will last a very very long time if kept cool and dry.

Another way to look at it is, would you rather have five 30 0 6 rounds or 50. 22 rounds to gather your food for the next 3 months? Both would weigh about the same to carry. You could make the argument that the 30.06 would get you some deer meat. Sure, but so can a well placed head shot with a .22. In fact I am not sure which round has killed more. Although statistics will never be known about that. I am not saying your thoughts are wrong, I am just giving you something else to think about.

My local Ace Hardware has .22 LR and Mag in stock. 3 box limit, but I think it's $6.50/50 for LR and $14/50 for Mag.

When I was in middle and high school, in 90s, me and little brother would shoot maybe a 500 box every couple months. Now I worry about shooting more than 50, because I know I have to make that 500 box last for who knows how long. Local Walmart have none, and when I ask, they tell me they just don't get any anymore.a

50 rounds doesn't even last long enough to open a second beer...

I've been shooting 9mm Makarov and .40 S&W more, and started playing around with bows/cross bows more; but those are expensive hobbies.

You post made me laugh good. I have enough enough trouble hitting the dang deer at 100 yards with the 06. I would have to be about 50 foot away to hit it in the head...lol. I have a couple of .22 rifles and one Hi-Standard .22 long barrel 9 shot revolver that was my fathers and is older than I am (59). I keep it filled with the rat shot for the occasional opossum/snake.

I guess if I told you I have shot groundhogs at over 75 yards with a .22 Colt Woodsman pistol, you probably wouldn't believe me would you?

I believe you. I was speaking of myself. They had a story on the news down here tonight about a fellow who lost an arm in a hunting accident where he was shot by his partners gun getting in the truck. This guy had won all kinds of trophy's just with his one arm skeet shooting. Pretty cool story.

Even though Gander Mountain is about an hour away, and I'm normally not able to visit it that frequently, I was in town again yesterday and dropped by. In the course of four days, all of the .22 ammo that I mentioned in my previous post was gone with the exception of the Eley. I had hoped that maybe the shortage was coming to and end and at least it does seem to be mitigating, but I think its still got a ways to go before it's over.

As mentioned, I'm an absolutely a horrible shot, but I still enjoy trying to get better. I never doubt anybody else's stories of fantastic shots, although I do make some exceptions. However, I know that my Father-in-law, whether on purpose or not is an extremely poor judge of distance. He reckons that the distance from his deer stand to the deer feeder that he puts out to bait the deer is about 150 yards (he hunts on my property). When I rolled it off with a measuring wheel, it was only about half the distance - 80 yards. I've never mentioned this to him, because it would serve no purpose.

Of course, he's the kind of hunter that always tells me about the "monster buck" that lurks around our land. It's so large it could shade a team of draft horses at high noon and crable a baby grand piano in its rack. It doesn't walk so much as it ghosts across the land scape....

Oddly enough, it ends up being much smaller when it shows up on the game camera...

Good luck and take care.
