I live in the country and there no PD! just state police and there spread to thin to show up (to many country)so the person that's lives in the country SHOULD BE PREPARED for breaks ins and trespass. Now here in Wisconsin you can carry a gun on your land and the cops cant do anything about that! as long as you don't threaten anyone with you gun just showing up with a sidearm on your hip is nothing after all its your land.

Interesting thread. I've got a mile lone drive - through woodland. I have the private drive and no trespassing signs, but have the occasional trespasser. But I also have a tenant, some rented farmland and a half-dozen regular hunters who drop by. Having people around - sometimes with guns - is a great way to protect land. The hunters also put up my posted signs each year for hunting season - and come in off times to shoot groundhogs and similar. When I first acquired the land, I worried about trespassers. I put up some big posts at the highway with a big metal gate - chained to one of the posts. On Christmas Eve someone chainsawed the posts and stole the gate. That's the only problem I've ever had. I just abandoned the gate idea.

At one time I thought of posting a biohazard sign( looks like multiple crossed scimitars) with a note - "Warning - Hemorrhagic Fever found in mammal population on this property. Access poses EXTREME risks."

But then I used my brain - the people who were coming in uninvited would probably have no idea what the sign meant. Should I ever need medical attention or an ambulance - they would know and probably not enter.

Sooo....... my old battered metal gate has stood guard for over 30 years now.

Last year I had the OPP break a trail around one of my Unlocked gates to search one of my bush lots for the body of a missing man.
I would have happily opened the gate for them if they would have asked. I was mad for a bit until I spoke to the detachment commander and he reminded me of the following:

In some provinces, such as Ontario, there is a reverse onus provision. In Ontario, a person is presumed to be trespassing if he or she is found in a private garden, field or other land under cultivation, inside lands that are fenced for livestock or cultivation and on lands where notice has been posted. It is important to note that trespass is not presumed in privately owned natural areas if it is not posted as prohibited. This point is in line with the philosophy of encouraging recreational activity on privately held lands.

He did comment that posting it may not have deterred them tho and there was little I could really do about it.
I have posted red dots at all points of entry now and we'll see what happens in the future.

Here is my driveway.

You have already gone 1/10th of a mile down my driveway past a no trespassing sign to reach these.

I made a turn around spot for you at this point for you to back into and get yourself the other direction.

We are super friendly and good neighbors but we do want strangers to be nervous.

"Hi, what brings you to these parts? Name's Fred, and this is Martha; what's yours?"
,,,,,,, kid pipes up "my dad never killed anybody but he would if he had to."

Visitor: "Sorry, I'm turning around as quick as I can,,,,,"

There was a study done of the most effective signs for deterring trespassers or burglars. Turned out, the best was "Watch the Snake."

Of course this only works for those on foot.

Our land is nearly surrounded by state game lands and hunters start there but wander over to ours. We have plenty so its really not a problem plus I don't want to run around during hunting season playing the role of cop. Plus the more deer taken the better. We allow walk-in fishing and thus get a generous amount of stocked trout. But two problems: one is that just when you want to fish there is someone already there. Second is that fisherman tend to leave litter. Its funny, a hunter can move through your land and leave little trace but people who fish leave bait packaging, food wrappers, bottles, and lots of line. Don't know why its so hard for them to just carry it out.

I read Virginia law on brandishing. Brandishing is showing or pointing to a fire arm with INTENT TO THREATEN. Carrying is ok. Putting your hand on the gun in a threatening manner is a no no. Pointing a gun at someone is assault and is a felony. It's all subjective as far as brandishing. I think this law can be used(abused) to give gun carriers a hard time. Even if the Govt. can't prove it's case, you can go broke defending, which will deter carrying.
