Apparently my new grapple is in the mail!
Rain, snow, sleet, or hail!
Congrats.

Island provided a great explanation. To put it simpler, hwatkins' grapple is a 50" and it is also the perfect grapple for you: Everything Attachments Compact Wicked Root Grapple 50"
We'll put the JD hitch on it for no extra. Actually, the photos on our website show it with the JDQA.

I'm torn between the 50" linked above and the 54" single-lid.
The 50" has the advantages of lower weight (plenty strong for my tractor but adds some lifting capacity) and a 30" wide lid (so 60% of the grapple is covered by the lid, which I think I'd like).
The 54" has the advantages of a larger opening (37" instead of 30") and the bigger hydraulic cylinder for extra clamping force. But the lid is 27" wide (50% of the grapple width), it weighs 75-95# more than the 50" (depending on whether the slats are in or out of the 50", though I'd probably never remove them).
What are the actual cylinder diameters on the 50" and the 54"?
The 50" grapples have 2" x 4".
The 54" and up are 2.5" x 5".

Remember that clamping force is not that important for most grapple operations. You are really just closing the grapple to hold the load in as gravity will keep the load pinned to the bottom tines and the upper lid just keeps the load from falling forwards. Different than a clamshell style grapple with near vertical bottom tines where clamping force holds the entire load because gravity would make the load fall down and out.Wow, that makes this especially tough. 2" --> 2.5" means an increase in clamping force of over 50%. I wish I could try a grapple or two out to see what is more important to me.

I don't know what the loader capacity is on your JD. I'd choose the 50" if I still had my Kioti CK20 with a bit over 1000lbs lift. I'd get the new 54" if buying again for my DK40 with 2700lbs lift.
I'd go for the 50 too unless there is a compelling need for 37" rather than 30" opening. Overall you'll be able to lift heavier loads with the 50" and all of us learn how to compress light brush into a grapple anyways so the 30" is not a big disadvantage. My loader is rated to lift about 1250# to 5' at the pin, but I've had stuff on the forks that I think was more than that. Right now I'm leaning toward the 50".

I don't know what they rate it for but it is better built than my Millonzi 48 which is still doing fine after eight aggressive years mounted on a Kioti DK40 with 2760lb loader lift. That 54 is the one I'd buy for any tractor in the 35-60hp range.Travis; This 54" is still just rated for max. 35 HP Tractors?? My tractor is 46 HP and 2500 lb. lift.
