It could be anything. Any barrels on my family's land or buildings has had petroleum products in it regards of what was originally in it.

Around here, those blue plastic drums number in the thousands and everyone has several. The blue ones here had soy sauce in them and they come out of Michigan or Wisconsin. There are so many they have reshaped the landscape.

Hydraulic oil
Acetone
Paint
etc.

Have seen, and have used black drums having any of the above.

Im sure there is tons more.

Actually, I think I have only seen plastic drums in white, black, and blue. So only 3 colors for literally thousands of liquids that can be stored in them.

Plastic barrels, and most plastic containers have a code on the bottom that tells what type of plastic it is. From that info, we can know what liquids are safe to store in them. And from that we would know the codes that indicate if it can store really caustic liquids. Then steer clear of those barrels. Just a thought.

Fer sure. Most plastic barrells are going to be HDPE, which is unaffected by acetone. That is a good thing, since I store some acetone in an HDPE squirt bottle in my shop for the past 20+ yrs...
