Hi guys- I know this is an old thread, but I'm looking at a TN75S with Power Shuttle. Can someone explain to me the difference between a mechanical shuttle, hydraulic shuttle and a power shuttle? Thanks,
Kelly
The standard shuttle requires the clutch be manually operated (by foot).
The power shuttle is electronic. The clutch can be used in the typical fashion (every change of the shuttle transmission -- forward or backwards). Or, after starting (you must press the clutch peddle down to start it), you can use it to change direction. To add to the conversation, this is a 'dual clutch' system, not a true shuttle transmission (not gears getting changed, but engaging different sides of the clutch, IIRC). NOT the same as a snow blower, but the end effect is the same. The hydraulic system does the work, the switches and potentiometers (in the clutch pedal) feed the computer, the computer controls the hydraulics. There are also several position and pressure switches/sensors in the system. By the way, the clutch has a strong spring to make you think it is a conventional clutch. The end of the peddle is attached to a potentiometer (variable resistor).
Some power shuttle clutch work must be done using a computer, as some things must be reset or adjusted that way. It is good to know who in your area will be able to service your tractor on those special occasions. Don't go just by the sign. A Deere dealer close to me used to be a New Holland dealer (it has been over 10 years ago now, I think). They still have a parts and service contract with NH, but you will not see a dealership sign to that affect. So ask your area dealers, or even contact NH for dealers that have service arrangements.
Cab tractors (or those that are stored under a roof) generally have less problems due to the wiring not being exposed to moisture.
You can find a number of posts relating to troubleshooting these around here, especially the flashing trouble codes (on the dash). Be wary of buying one that is flashing codes. Having said that, mine has flashed codes for a couple of years now (which started back up after a service trip for a switch/pressure sensor replacement and computer reset). And I wouldn't feel at all worried about selling it this way.
