I've used weldable hinges but not for gates. I would imagine large ones for that application might prove cost prohibitive. Lots of other options available.

To attach an aluminum checker plate tool box lid to my steel fuel transfer tank I purchased one aluminum hinge and one steel, then mismatched them.for welding.

If you do use this type be sure to keep it well greased/lubed.

Have seen some where opening a gate or steel door that has been not used for a time will tear or ripped the hinge from the weld...

Not a problem if the hinge gets used often.

Used these on my heavy blast booth doors. I think these would work excellent on a gate.

We used those pretty much exclusively on OI gates. What you want to do is match the hinges to the post and hinge end of the gate before you build the gate, much easier to have just one end to deal with than an entire gate.

They look similar to these that I use ... They also have a ball bearing

Barrel Hinges - 5"
The problem with that type of hinge is that a security gate can just be lifted off the hinge when you only have a two piece hinge. For flat services like a loading dock, one can be turned in each direction to prevent shifting, but on a horizontal gate that is not the case.

Not on a gate. I've used them on large barn doors (4' x 9') and they were used as hinge points on my dump trailer.

My gates have two, the top and bottom supporting the load and the middle one reversed so there is no way to lift off the gate without first taking out the middle hinge.
