I have an old Walls hunting jacket and an army surplus M-65 field jacket with liner. Neither one really do the job when it gets cold and windy here in SC TN. Doesn't get too cold here (teens usually is the lowest) but I do have a lot of wind and working on my open tractor makes it even worse.

So what jacket do people here recommend for cold and windy weather? I have several Carhartt work pants and they have been great so I'm leaning towards Carhartt but I'm open to other ideas. Oh and it needs to be in 2 or 3XL Tall sizes.

Thanks!

Hard to beat "overhauls" when it's both cold and windy. Best to start with a good down vest underneath everything. Most are very lightweight and thin but are really great for keeping in core heat. And perfect by themselves for this time of year when it can be very cold first thing in the morning but hot in the late afternoon.

Dress in layers, that way if you get warm you can take one off. I like to have a thermal base layer, wool shirt, hooded sweatshirt, and medium coat. At 15' that would be too warm, unless the wind is blowing as you mentioned.

Carhart is good, if you're happy with it why reinvent the wheel.

Carharts are pretty nice... A pair of bibs under a hooded jacket and you'll feel like you're in your own personal little heated cabin! :)

That's what I wear ice fishing. Good to -10 very nicely.

Do get the Artic lining with a Carhart jacket. It is the warmest of all their liners.

Have you considered the new electrically heated jackets from the tool manufacturers? Dewalt, Milwaulkee and Bosch I think make them. I dont have one yet (only because the jackets arent compatible with my batteries) but they get decent reviews.

For Carhart, I have one of their canvas jackets similar to this, but I think it has the heavy lining (my exact jacket must be discontinued) its warm, but not waterproof, which can cause issues. Fit is excellent for freedom of movement and it runs large enough that you can put heavy sweaters under it. Its been very durable, with no rips yet (10+years) but the zipper is beginning to go.

If I really want to be warm, I pull out the Helly Hansen overalls and jacket with the blue fleece lining. Available in your size. Very comfortable and super warm, used all over up.here. Water resistant and VERY warm, maybe too warm for somebody down south. Expensive if you dont need extreme protection too.

If it is real cold ( some of you guys will probably laugh at my definition of real cold ) I like to wear a rain coat over my real coat. It blocks the wind and keeps the snow from getting my other coat wet.

I do the same thing.

The best coat that I have for extreme conditions is a "snowboarding" coat. It's getting tired now but it was warm, had a hood, plenty of pockets, and water resistant (nothing is truly waterproof.)
I bought it 8or9 years ago at a local surplus store after getting working in a snowstorm, I was going to call it a day but with my new coat I went back and worked all afternoon.

That helps for a while, but a raincoat also holds in your body moisture, it can't evaporate, and if you stop moving, it can chill and then you get cold. Its a trade-off depending on how long you're going to be outside.
