Tired of being cold: Best, warmest jacket for farm/tractor work?

To answer some of the questions and comments: I already have a good set of bib overalls, $270 pair from Cabela's Bargain Cave that I got for $60, they work very well. As do my 800 gram Thinsulite Danner boots and wools socks. My daughter got me one of those Russian/Alaskan State Trooper fur hats last year, the one with the ear flaps: it's very warm when the weather is cold. I have a very good pair of insulated work gloves, I think they're train gloves, not sure.

As far as layering: a jacket (with liner if it's the M-65), polarfleece jacket under that, then a long sleeved shirt, under shirt, the a poly under shirt. That's five layers for the upper body (6 with the liner) and 4 for the arms. The polarfleece is warm, dry and light. But it absolutely sucks for wind resistance. So if the jackets aren't up to snuff, then the wind comes right through all the layering doesn't work as well as it should.

A nylon covered parka or ski jacket would work except that I'm worried about robustness and toughness. I'm pretty hard on my work clothes, especially the upper body, I just tear the crap out of stuff, so it needs to be tough.

So the jacket is the missing link hear, not layering, not bibs, not anything else, just the jacket. It needs to be tough, warm and wind resistant. Whatcha got?

You wear all that in TN? :)

Carhart makes some thicker material for their jackets. If you have that many layers on, all you need is a tough outer shell, so skip their arctic wear or you'll sweat to death. I think they call it a DUCK cloth.

I think with a canvas type material jacket from Carhartt, Berne, etc should work fine. With the bibs and jacket combination over jeans and a hooded sweatshirt, I never worry about additional layering and we get well below zero (F) here.

Again, I stay real warm with just a good set of long underware and a carhartt insulated coveral. Buy your underware several sizes too big, and they will fit you for many years as they shrink down. Same thing with the overall, get it at least a size too big, that canvas is going to shrink. Black is a good color not to show grease which you will pick up around the tractor. Nothing wrong with brown, but my wife always tried for me to wear carhartt brown coats around hunting season.... Good rubber soled pack boots will keep your feet warm and dry. Get the heaviest artic gloves or mitts you feel like spending money on.. Look for the ones with long cuffs that will go over the sleeves of the coveralls. And buy some of those earth/iron heat packs if you need them. Knit sock mask and a Mad Bomber hat to top it off. Several masks are better than one, cuz you will be needing to wash them...

So it's just a tough wind proof jacket/she'll you need. There should be a plethora of choices for that. A light oversized nylon jacket should fit the bill nicely. For durability any oversized work jacket over that.

I immediately thought of the younger brother from the movie "A Christmas Story"... his Mum put him in so many snow-suits that his arms couldn't move & he had to be helped up when he toppled over.

I forgot to mention this earlier.

Years ago, ok, decades ago, I bought quite a bit of military surplus wool pants, jackets, scarves and hats from Sportsman's Guide. I have not bought anything from them in years so I no longer get a catalog and I don't know what they currently sell but I got some really good quality clothes for a low price. German wool pants, Swiss and Polish overcoats, US wool shirts, pants, scarves and hats. Much of this was from the end of the Cold War so there might not be any of it left to sell but it was excellent quality.

Funny story. The Swiss overcoat, I bought four of them. is really nice. High quality wool with a satin liner that was made to keep you warm. Fold down the sleeves, flip up the collar, button it all up and you are snug as a bug in a rug. Very thin too. The overcoat is very nice looking and I used to wear it to work. I had stopped on the way to work to get bagels and coffee, and as I stood in line, I noticed the guy in front of me had on the exact same coat.:confused3::laughing::laughing::laughing: I know where he bought it. :D:D:D First and last time I saw someone else wearing that coat.:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan
