Gate Hinge

With a zirc fitting you should be good. Replaced a bunch of those on road crossings because someone installed the hinges without a zirc fitting. I would do like ultrarunner suggested and put the middle one the opposite direction from the top and bottom for security. Like others stated, keep them greased. You can free them with a zirc tool designed to force penetrating oil in them. But that tactic is hit and miss.

Given that barrel hinges can go for as much as $45 a pair, if you don't need three per leaf you could put a block of steel above the top of the gate hinge on the post that is fastened with a recessed allen head (or big square drive or star drive for wood) that can only be accessed when the gate is open. when closed the gate frame would obstruct getting a tool on the fastener. Bit more fab work on a metal post, but it would keep a couple of donut-punchers with grease guns from floating your gates off.
For anyone interested, I recommend sending a catalog request to King Metals. Sometimes it's easier to find interesting things flipping through the print catalog that looking online.

Anyone ever use this type of gate hinge?

maybe a heavy duty cabnet door or an actual hinge like door. but a gate? *shakes head no*

metal, lumber, heck even concrete will move well the ground will that is. and for that reason. a gate will sage at opposite end of the hinged edge. for that reason only. gate hinges need to be adjustable.

Not if you build the gate correctly.

I used those hinges on cabinets that I use indoors. I make my own. Pretty easy to do that if you have a lathe. This summer I put up two new out door gates with auto openers on them and I wanted a hinge that was heavy duty, smooth running, greasable and long lifespan so I build a couple of these. If your gate is really heavy this might be an idea you can use. They are designed so the gate can't be lifted off either. Just something to think about.

Impressive. What's with the two slugs in the third picture?

I have built several gates with that type of hinge , I put the zerks , one facing up and the other down. You cant get the gate off unless you start cutting steel, and as far as sagging , build the post right and secure them correctly and NO problems.

I've also machined weld on hinges as shown in the OP photo. Used them on a generator enclosure I made. Worked well.

The problem with that type of hinge is that a security gate can just be lifted off the hinge when you only have a two piece hinge. For flat services like a loading dock, one can be turned in each direction to prevent shifting, but on a horizontal gate that is not the case.

I just turn the top one over ... Can't lift it off then ... Keep them greased
