Well if the transaxle that you have is like the one in post #6, then yes, you will have to split the case to replace the brake pads. Take a close look, are the pads really worn out, or does the brake lever just need adjusting?

Thanks, Richard. The illustration in post #6 is of my tranny. Now that I have the crud off, it looks as if the outer brake pad is quite thick (surely can't be the original?) I'm not sure I can see the inner one; but the brakes do work when the lever's activated so apart from adjustment I'm leaving them alone. I'll leave the case unopened and assume it still has its lubricant (has been running fine without mechanical problems.)

But what a peculiar way to design a braking system !?!
