As some of you know my wife and I are on vacation for a month in Gulf Shores Alabama. We had a great time the first week with our oldest daughter and her family. Second week with the youngest and her family was going great until Wednesday.

Some idiot let a not quite half grown German Shepard run loose on the beach. We were standing watching the two year old play in knee deep to her water when the dog came out of nowhere and knocked her down. We were close enough that all we had to to was bend over and pick the screaming child up. The dog circled around me and came from the opposite direction and knocked her face down in the water as she was screaming. My daughter and I got her up and got her to breathing again. To say I am pissed off is an understatement.

So let me explain it to all you dog lovers in a way you can understand. Keep your **** dogs away from areas and events where people are. Most people think you are being complete assholes for bringing them. Leave them Home. They are NOT children. They have no place at the beach, no place in stores, no place at the mall, they have no place anywhere a kid could reach out and startle one and get snapped. Leave the dogs HOME!!

We spent Wednesday night afraid to let the two year old sleep, look up dry drowning for an explanation. She screamed all day Thursday when we tried to take her to the beach because she was terrified of the dog. Their vacation has been ruined because some butthole had to bring their darlin' little pup to the beach and let it run wild.

Do not respond to this post. I don't care about your opinion or how you keep your dog under control. Just keep it home and not around crowds of people.

I'M A DOG OWNER... AND I LOVE DOGS

You are absolutely right in your assessment and there is no excuse for this bad behavior. Either by the dog or the owner.......the owner should be cited and fined for this poor judgement.
If the owner can't control his dog, he his should consider himself lucky the child wasn't hurt....I would be very mad too.

I forgot. After we chased the dog off it ran down the beach and knocked another child down and put a scratch down the right side of her face. The dad was in waist deep water fishing and the pregnant mother had to chase it off.

I would like to find the owners and have a baseball bat handy.

And I have waited two days to post this so I could calm down.

Sorry to hear about the traumatic dog event in your grand-daughter's life. Curious if you were at a public beach with lifeguards, etc?
If so, did you consider speaking to one of them and getting the number of the dog control people to capture the dog, to prevent further incidents like the second one you cited?
Your g-daughter, unfortunately will likely have a hard time with dogs for quite some time, if not forever. If it were me I'd consider counselling for her, and her parents to help her through this and especially to help her parents find ways to help them and her cope with this type of trauma.
I know my MIL was deathly afraid of dogs her whole life because of some big Newfy's she grew up with.
I don't know all the details, but suffice it to say whatever help you can arrange for your family could be very beneficial in the long run.
And yes, dog owners need to be way more aware of how dogs can and often do negatively impact other's lives.

As an aside, I was on vacation when we pulled into a rest stop in NJ on our travels south this summer. I parked next to a car from PA that had a full grown dog in the way back of a station wagon. ALL the windows were closed and I looked around for people to connect to the car. I probably would have broken a window to free the dog because it was 93 degrees at the time.
The owners came up just as I was deciding what to do, and I gave them a rash of excrement while the woman tried to tell me it was only for 5 minutes while they went to the bathrooms. The woman, her daughter, a guy and a boy. You couldn't walk to the bathroom in five minutes, one way, let along two, not counting the lines to the women's room.
In that case I was more concerned for the dog's life; it is against the law in most every state I'm aware of to lock a dog or any animal in a hot car. I told them that but they persisted. I needed to go inside to get something to drink and to relieve myself so I just kept telling them what a holes they were as I walked away, and that they should not own a dog and did not deserve to have one either.
People are STUPID, and stupider about dogs/animals, and often about and with kids too. Some should not have animals and many many more should not breed.
So sorry for you and your family and their woes. I've had dogs all my life and we NEVER let them loose in situations like that. They don't belong on the beach. Too often they will try to herd kids like that one did with your G-daughter; and that can have disastrous consequences.

My complaint is every dog that I have seen when arriving at the beach it's first maneuver was to take a very large DUMP!
Most public beaches IF they allow dogs the dog must be on a leash and under control.
It's October so Lifeguards usually stop after Labor Day.

I forgot about the Labor Day clearing out of lifeguards.....
I concur on the dump part too, which is unsanitary, in addition to disgusting too. Dogs don't belong on public beaches, IMHO, period.

You overeacted. If the vehicle had been air conditioned up to the brief time the dog was left the temp would not be an issue for 10 or 15 minutes in the cool soaked vehicle. ... It was a rest area not a shopping center FCS!

When I was a kid same thing happened to me. Neighbor's dog wanted to play (which I didn't understand) and knocked me down several times. My mother had to rescue me. After that I was frightened by dogs for 40 years. I wouldn't come near to them no matter how friendly they were. Then my wife decided that kids will get a dog because her parents promised a dog to her when she was a child but never delivered. So I am a dog owner for past 27 years and don't understand the fear or mistrust I used to have anymore.

NO I didn't over react. You weren't there; it was a rest stop on the NJ Turnpike with hundreds of cars. Look up dogs left in hot cars survival, or similar. It's against the law to leave a dog in a hot car, (regardless of whether the AC was on at some recent time  ).
