Is 2wd ok to bale with?

Worthless??? I wouldn't say that. But a 4wd is definitely better. I used a 2wd with a loader for 25 years. I did have 1300 lbs of bh on the rear, though. It worked but not as well as my 4wd.

You better not go down any hills unless you have a change of underwear. And they can't back up a hill.

PROFarms, Re#25. I do not understand how a bigger tractor will be of benefit in (presumably) combining grain or beans. If it is for leading off, what do you do now?

Neighbors where I grew up used a couple of old ford 2wd tractors for all their cutting, raking, baling, and wagon hauling. And the fields were pretty steep too.

If they are too light I'll agree with you. We used a 2wd Ford tractor that had the wheels filled and cast wheel weights. Never had any problems moving hundreds of round bales with the double hydraulic spear on the loader (read 1 or 2 bales) or thousands of square bales with the Kuhn 510f bale grabber. In the winter a set of double ring chains were thrown on and it was good to go!


That being said, any newer tractor I would not recommend getting a loader with a 2wd. All I'm saying is that its not as impossible as what many people assume.

Most of the folks around here using 4x are younger to middle aged, all the old timers still use 2x for their farming.
I think they're just like trucks, managed to get stuck in a lot of places with 4x, knew better to stay away from them with 2x.

Forgive me, I didn't read thru every reply, so if this has been said already.... sorry.

More has was bailed with an "N" Series Fords than will EVER be baled afterwards. Back in the day they were everywhere, did everything and few considered them sub-standard in doing it all.

Newer tractors are faster and more powerful, few are actually heavier and WIEGHT is was really matters for stability and traction. You need a pretty high HP tractor, or loaded tires and/or accessories/FWA, etc to get heavier than an "N" models were at about 3000-4000#.
