Yes, I get that I can flip the hog on it's side. It's not a bad idea, and I could get the gear oil changed out as well as doing some blade sharpening, etc. while it's draining.
What is cornhead grease's advantage, if any, over dino 80-90 weight, recommended by Woods?

The thing with corn head grease is it is thin like oil when it is working and thick like grease when it is cold so it won't leak out as fast as 80/90 wt gear oil.

Easier is a subjective term... but safer? There is nothing inherently unsafe with flipping a mower over / on it's side.

Safety resides with the user, not the mower.

Ok, so flipping a mower on its side or upside down is no more difficult or risky than using a transfer pump. Makes perfect sense to me. :confused2:

If you don't want to flip it, raise the front end enough to let all the oil drain to the back or you won't be getting it all.

People jump out of planes with fabric in a backpack every day.

Leading cause of death for all people is living.

You take a risk just waking up in the morning.

Best piece of safety equipment in existence is your brain.

I know some people that could get hurt just watching someone safely flip a mower on tv. If you are one of those people? Just head on back to the bedroom ;) its a big wonderful dangerous world out here. :)

I would say it is more dangerous than using a transfer pump, but not enough to be concerned about. As farmers we lift, hoist and load things all the time that might be considered more risky than lots of things but working safe, I don't see an issue. Not to minimize the concerns, but they are predictable and injury from it is preventable.

I did NOT flip my 3PH snow blower to change the grease because the shafts only exit the SIDES of the gear case. The nasty water and grunge goes to the bottom of the case where I can suck it up and wipe it out. On the other hand, the most abused bearing in a cutter's gear box is down at the bottom. You can't get a sucker hose past the bearing to get the nasty stuff. If I am charging someone to change the grease in a piece of equipment, I change ALL of it, not just the top portion.

I unload hay 2 levels high off a deck over trailer using a 1955 ford 850 and equally old loader, with a 3pt bale spear that I made brackets to chain it in the bucket. 2 levels high is at the max height of the loader, so the bucket tilt cyl has to ease the bale up enough to let me back away from the trailer. :)

Flipping a mower on its side seems pretty tame ;)
