TSO, honest question here: if money was not a huge constraint and all the local dealers were the same, would you still buy a LS over one of the "premium" brands?

If you are planning to produce hay you are going to need multiple tractors.
I worked a 100 acre cattle farm with a 50 and 30 hp tractor.
Get a zero turn for the yard mowing.
You can always find things for the small tractor, I used the 30 hp tractor the most.
Large tractors are less nimble for thing like the phd

My thoughts: get a cab! Don't listen to the people talking about all the extra time it will take getting on and off with a cab. It's a silly argument. I put more than 500+ hours per year on my tractor, and in that 500 hours, I'd be surprised if all the extra "alleged time" that is added with a cab added up to one hour. the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

.

I agree with this, get a cab for the comfort. I would not consider less for the Montana winters because a cab just makes more sense. I don't see convertibles as a large percent of the automotive market for the same reasons.

Hard for me to get a handle on your true intentions for future use so I wont even try to steer you to any particular size machine. What I will say is to evaluate yourself and your needs carefully and if you feel the need for bigger will be the most likely outcome then don't waste time or money waiting for prices to go up while you learn or play with a smaller machine. I have tractors here ranging from 20HP up to 150HP as well as a tracked loader and all of them have an intended use. Yes the baby sits Idle and hasn't been used for over a year but everything else gets run and used with the 40HP and 80HP machines being the most frequently used Also I agree with not letting the naysayers talk you out of a cab. I don't have a cab on all my machines but every winter I wish I did and would live with having to open a door to get in and out in the warm months or just simply remove a door (small price to pay for the comfort provided) if it ever became a bother.
Secondly I would take into consideration future use and the possibility of bigger machines when planning any buildings/storage/garage/barn type structures and indeed have high enough doors roof lines included now rather than later when/if the need arises.
Look around the area or similar areas and see what type and size others are using for similar needs and if possible ask them questions about what they like and dislike about their equipment this will give you the best answers with the most amount of confidence to make the same or better choices then they have made. Nothing beats Hindsight when a similar decision is to be made, someone else already made all the mistakes you might make now and just by talking to them you can avoid the learning curve and get right to the finish line.
Good luck with what ever you choose!

I really like the Massey 4608,09 & 10 machines (Iseki built, like my rock solid 1648 & 1652 Massey's) ... But I feel they are bigger than necessary for this situation, and Massey doesn't really offer a good cab machine in the 50-70 HP utility range, so I wouldn't be able to recommend a Massey here.

I've seen plenty of user complaints on this forum on the JD 5100 series machines, so I really wouldn't be able to recommend JD.

I'm not familiar with the rest of the competition in this size category to make a particular recommendation, but from experience I know that LS makes good machines, and that XU5065 appears to be just the right size for this situation.

Fair enough. Thank for the civil response!

In reading thru all this again, I would simply emphasize a few things that stood out: you will want a cab- allergies from a new environment can be unpleasant, heat and cold will be a factor in Montana (I've been there in the winter) as well as airborne crud from bush hogging. A SSQA front hydraulic auger will be a blessing, especially if you are ensconced in a cab, trying to see what you are doing. Sounds like you are man who appreciates quality and good design, so be thorough in checking out Kubotas. Whatever, get a SSQA, not a proprietary QA system.

You may decide you want to deal with snow yourself, so a plow and a toasty cab will be necessary. A rear blower will work, but you will quickly tire of turning to look over your shoulder, most likely. Lastly, as was written, you may never see a dealer's lot again after purchase. Most owners around here have a field service guy who comes out to service tractors, if they don't just DIY. UPS can supply whatever parts, probably fluids and filters, you will need.

Enjoy being in the unusual and enviable position of choosing from free the constraints of cost (more or less).

While I agree he may need a second larger tractor if he expands his operation a large compact would be a good size. In my work I am considering a larger 200hp tractor but would not sell the 60hp compact because it is so handy.

For now considering the tasks the O_P listed a 65 hp compact would work pretty well.

Are both of the ZTRs gas? If not buy the diesel one. If they are both gas buy the heaviest one. I suspect the Kubota is heavier.
