Dawg;

Unless I'm mistaken, Missouri was south of the M-D line derived after the start of the War Between the States? Maybe you were actually "held hostage" in East St. Louis, Illinois?

I've never heard anyone consider St Louis part of the north and historically the Missouri Compromise just prior to the Civil War did make it a slave state. When the Civil War started however, St. Louis, with a large German immigrant community, remained in Northern control and most of Missouri fought with the North.

I was not heavily armed enough nor crazy enough to venture across the bridge to that side of the river.

Snakes aren't too bad. Keep your yard mowed and treated for bugs. Snakes won't hang out as much. Moccasins are bad, but unless you have standing water, swamp, or a pond, you don't have much to worry about for them. Coppor heads are the most common encounters here in arkansas. My jack Russell got popped by one that was shedding it's skin, or just got done shedding. Not sure which. Bugger got him three times in the snout. Swelled up good, but the vets bill was only around $125, with just giving him a broad spectrum antibiotic and steroid shot. An adult copperhead holds its venom, so the bite has very little to none. Now the baby's are another story. Grandson got nailed by a baby copperhead and needed 8 doses of antivenom

Another member mentioned chiggers and fire ants. Keep lots of itch cream, and watch where you stand. I battle the ants every summer. I swear the fire ant killer actually makes them reproduce faster  treating your yard for bugs usually takes care of the chiggers and will make the ants move on for a bit.

Well, I guess since University of Missouri is now a SEC school they are part of the south, but it never felt like that while I was there. Maybe since I have spent all of my time (except while there) in the "Deep South" and Texas it just did not feel like the south.

Well, since it seems you are coming from Volney, New York I decided to look it up.
I was a little surprised to see you are only a few miles from Fulton.

I live in Fulton (Mississippi, that is)

As others wrote, be careful with your dog.

ALWAYS shake your boots out. Brown recluse can be PAINFUL.

HECK YES THERE IS SNOW!

Last year we had a 4 inch snowfall! Roads were shut down for HOURS!

Having come from Burlington, Vermont I recognize some major differences in the people down here in Mississippi. First of all as a general rule most Southerners are SLOW talking compared to us from the North. It's not a reflection of their intelligence or speed of thought, they just often speak slower.
Just because someone is speaking slow don't assume they are slow mentally. Northerners can be fast and stupid.

The education system down here is POOR based on national rankings and also a niece who was a teacher here a few years ago. My BIL's chikdren were told about 10 years ago they could not use the internet for homework because not everyone had internet.

Liquor laws are also weird. Fulton JUST voted in liquor sales. The county is still dry. It seems to be one of those rules they use to bust people they don't like. My house was owned by a deputy Sheriff known for his beer parties, in a dry county.

Didn't realize you are in Fulton! I'm only 25-30 minutes away.

I spent some "quality" time in St. Louis, once or twice a year, when we brought our plane back to McDonnell Douglas for ECM, etc. upgrades during Vietnam. Seldom was heard "y'all", except from my aircrew buddies. It was mostly "youz guys"? No offense to our St Louis Friends, I was born and raised in Nebraska.

I wasn't born in Texas but, I got here as fast as I could! (1967)

Well thanks! I didn't expect such a good response... My company is most likely going to relocate us to one of those areas. I am extremely happy to be getting out of this state. I do like to hunt, and tend to mind my own business. I hope to make some new friends down there.

If you have ever had a state with 95% of the geographical area of the state opposed to something yet the crowded and liberal city control everything, New York is it! Most of my life, I have survived one business after another closing here in NY. I'm tired of struggling to make a living and being smothered by taxes. Finally working for a company that cares for it's people and is offering transfers out of it's generosity.

It sounds like we will adapt all right, We aren't church people, but are believers. I would rather fix a persons porch or whatever out of caring than go to church, but that's just us... Thank-you for all the replies! I'll be keeping the dog on the lawn and shaking out my boots!
