Blue smoke on cold start/cold outside

Sent over video to the service manager today. He stated that he watched it along with two mechanics. He said that they all smoke in the cold. He is concerned about the puff he sees in the video. Might be a sticking injector. He stated that I have a four year warranty and to keep an eye on it. If it changes or gets worse to contact him. What do you think of this?

MIGHT BE?! Really. Gee, that's what I've said since day one. And NO, don't wait and see, get them to replace it, or repair it, and refund the $170 they charged you originally for their crappy diagnostics and 'service'. You paid for a warranty. A pissing injector will allow unburnt fuel into the crankcase and cylinder walls, create the smoking and puffing you are experiencing, and render worse fuel economy, etc. That's not even accounting for the reduced satisfaction with your otherwise excellent tractor.

It's their job to fix it. Have them do it, under warranty, NO expense to you. Push has come to shove- don't be intimidated by their care less attitude, require satisfactory service from them.

Why wouldn't they want to fix it ASAP. It money in their pocket for warranty work and most importantly, good customer service.

Why does he think it will just go away on it's own? It's not going to get better, only worse. I think it has been a constant little problem, and the cold has made it noticeable. I agree, get them to fix it NOW. This dealer sounds like he is trying to dodge the issue, now for the second time.

I agree with all of you. I am going to pursue it. I just have a question about the oil. How would I tell if diesel is in the oil? I check my oil regularly. it seems a little high afrter sitting overnight. The oil has 85 hours on it. I thought i had filled it to the full line but now it seems above it.

If you filled it up all the way after the engine had been running, some of the oil would still be up in the engine. Overnight, it will flow back down into the reservoir, thus overfilling it. Not a huge deal unless it's way over.

If you have enough diesel in the oil that you have noticeably more oil volume, then you have a major problem in the engine block, that you likely would have noticed by now.

Not sure how you would differentiate. Diesel and oil should be soluble in each other, meaning you won't get a layer. You could try pouring some into a clear clean container, if the densities are different enough, you might get some separation. However, I doubt you have contamination. As I said above, you need a lot of diesel leakage to raise the oil level noticeably.

Smell it. Diesel has a very strong and distinct odour.
I didn't read every post in great detail, but hopefully somebody has made it clear that a bluish colour in your exhaust output is generally the result of a fine mist of un-burned diesel fuel. Diesels operate totally on compression. If you are spewing raw fuel out of the exhaust and your injectors are all confirmed good, it's time to do a compression test. If your compression is down that is a sign of a problem with sealing at either the rings and piston or at the valves.

… hope this helps some :|

Or the head gasket.
This thread is already plenty long but ...
When I start my DK45s (2006 with about 450 hours) I only get a couple seconds of visible smoke. It rarely gets much below freezing here but I still only get that brief puff on the coldest days.
The smoke videos shown here are NOT NORMAL. If still under warranty, I'd harass the dealer until it was fixed. Unburned Diesel fuel isn't as bad ad unburned gasoline, which will strip the lubrication from the rings and bores, but it's still not good.
That smoke indicates a problem with a glow plug, injector, or compression in one or more cylinders. It isn't rocket science to troubleshoot this except you can only do it with the engine cold as the symptoms dissipate as the engine warms up (except the compression test which can and should be done on a warm engine). You might be able to isolate the offending cylinder if one of the exhaust manifold ports is noticeably cooler than the others (good job for non-contact thermometer) while smoking.
You paid for a fully functioning tractor, you might as well get what you paid for.

I am due for an oil change in about 15hrs. I was thinking of sending a sample over to Blackstone to see if diesel is present. If positive then the dealer has no arguement for delaying the fix. What do you think of this?

I would do that. Sounds like your dealer is kind of a meat head. The sample will give you peace of mind and some leverage with the regional rep if the dealer drags their feet.

I doubt you will find enough fuel in the oil to change the dealers position. Maybe a more direct approach is in order if the dealer will not take your claim seriously.
Take it to the dealer and start it up cold in the front drive so all the customers can see it and then ask if this is normal.
You paid to much for a machine that is not working properly and you have already paid for the warranty work to fix it.
