When I was a kid, some neighbors hit a horse with their van and after it came through the windshield, it was thrashing around and kicking the people in the car. Still makes me shudder to think about it.

I was too dumfounded to take a picture today, but I came upon a car stopped in traffic that had a trailer rim and tire in place of a rear wheel. Looked wrong from a distance, and when I pulled alongside I saw it was a trailer rim and a Chinese bias-ply trailer tire.

You're right, what could possibly go wrong?

Sometimes I pull a loaded trailer and it is shocking to see how close people follow, especially women. I stay on the back roads and my loads are extra secured, but they don't know that. At 50 MPH --in a 50MPH speed limit--I've had people less than a car length off my bumper. To remedy this I sometimes slow down so they can pass but few do. At times I slow way down--and have even stopped on the side--and some people stop behind and wait. Again, the worst offenders are almost always women, especially young women. A new risk I have seen is people talking on their cell phone and not even knowing what is going on.

Lots of farm equipment gets hauled around here and way too much of it is minimally secured. Lots of it is junk that seems to be barely secured. I tell my wife to drive in a different lane, stay behind and stay out of the trailer blind zone.

I am also amazed at how many people tailgate me when towing. They must have even more faith in my equipment than I do.
