Tresspassing neighbors

For all practical purposes, I have one neighbor. A really great neighbor. Having a good relationship can depend on how you deal with them. My neighbor asked if he could rent my backhoe. I said "he** no, you can borrow it at no cost, just as long as you bring it back". I am not worried, as I can see what he is doing and he is a great guy. I try to treat neighbors as family and have never had a bad neighbor. Just my $0.02

TomSeller, where do you live? I want to be your 2nd neighbor! Friends with backhoe privileges... nice!

A lot of times, how good a neighbor you have, depends on how good of a neighbor you are.

Sorry, buddy. Not always. We moved to Virginia 3 years ago, bought 80 acres with a house in the middle. Our only close neighbor lives on the corner of the main road where my 2000 ft driveway starts. Everything was peachy keen until we had the property surveyed and staked. Turns out my property line is literally 25 ft off of his back deck. Now mind you, this is still quite a distance from my house. However he went ape **** and accused my surveyor of being a hack, and us of ruining his property. Meanwhile he was there years before us, and never bothered to do a survey himself. So, he demands that I give him 50 to 80 ft of land to make amends and be a good neighbor. Needless to say that never happened and he won't so much as wave when we go by. Thank God he is in Florida half the year, and we ignore him the other half.

He said "a lot of times". Not " in every situation ". I'm sorry your neighbor stinks, but Buckeye's point is still solid.

Some states have a boundary line adjustment process. You might be able to give him your property near his house in exchange for his property not near his house.

Intentionally said "lots", not always. Was going to mention SA when i posted as a nutcase exception.
I've had my not so friendly neighbors. One, who i used to help a lot, went off on me one day because he thought my cat was in his yard and left a present. Well, we lived in a close house neighborhood at the time that had a lot of roaming animals. I just started ignoring him after that.

I mean he was always calling me for help, as soon as I'd get home from work my phone was ringing for something. Where i live now i get cows in my yard leaving presents, i just help them get them back in.

Some people have no concept of where their property line really is.
My dad had a neighbor cut several acres of timber on his property.

And to be fair, Mate, Steppenwolfe said, "Not always." Which is a different slant on the same theme.

So, you think you have the right to trespass on your neighbor's property, when ever you want to with guns, because it's a "regional attitude"? You should thank your lucky stars you don't live in Texas because, that "regional attitude" would not end well here. Our property is our property!

Guess your "regional attitude" allows you to enter your neighbor's homes or anyone's home, at will, with guns because "what harm are you doing"? I, for one, lump you in with the people that the OP got on his game camera.

Please don't take offense at my comments ........ learn from them?

Yall are both talking past each other.

If you look in the center of Maine, you won't see any town names. The land is owned by timber companies. In return for special tax treatment hunting, camping, and other activities are allowed. The timber companies also leave "beauty strips" near waterways so from the water it looks like wilderness. Their is a network of roads as well, also administered by those companies.

It is, as far as I know, a unique tradition. While privately owned, it is considered a "recreational commons."
Maine is the most heavily forested state in the country, with over 90% of the 25 million acres covered with forests.

The northern half of Maine is the largest contiguous forested area in the US east of the Mississippi. The landscape is dominated by spruce-fir forests, punctuated by very large lakes. Most of this land has never been cleared for agriculture. The human population is sparse; the communities are small; and there is little industry.

You are adamant that "Your property is your property." Can you hunt deer there whenever you want? Shoot birds flying overhead? Property rights are not quite as cut-and-dried as you think - anywhere.

The family who owns the property south of us was originally granted the land by the King: the King of England. So, yeah, there are some regional differences.....

<snip>Just like taking off my hat when I walk into a building. I still can't bring myself to wear a hat inside.

That may need to change for you to fit in. Depends on where in the "south" you are.
My local eatery (only open Thurs, Fri. Sat 5pm to 9) is a sit down, take the family to dinner, no alcohol type place. Not fast food. it takes the average diner about an hour to sit down, order, leisurely eat, pay and leave. I was surprised the first time I ate there (2011) and saw about 1/4 of the adult males wearing hats when they ate. From 20 somethings up to old codgers. That has declined over the years but I can still depend on seeing adult males, slightly dressed up, wearing hats while they eat.

Right, but right before that he said "sorry, buddy". Unless they're actually buddies and I'm in the wrong here it seemed like an unnecessary post contradicting some great wisdom. Just like when you call me "mate" when saying I'm being unfair. If we're in agreement on something, sure, call me mate or buddy, but otherwise, that's condescending in my book.
