You got that right!

"O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?"

"I'm right ch'eer, Juliet...I'd a been here sooner, but that darn tarnado come ovah the hill like a freight train... blowed my trailer house plum away...and man was I skeert!"

And so it begins

I hope no one from TLC is on this forum. Can you imagine them getting the cast of Honey Boo Boo to perform Hamlet or King Lear? That would set classical literature back several centuries.

I don't think anyone who works for TLC would know Shakespeare so no worries there. I am grateful however that TLC never influenced Will. Can you imagine the sequel to Romeo and Juliet being "Sister Wives" or "My Big Fat Fabulous Life"??

You do! Southern "English" is closer to Elizabethan English of the 17th century than what the modern Brits speak according to many linguists.

This is true . In fact the word "ain 't " as spoken with a southern accent was an attempt to sound like upper class noble people of England who used the same word .

Could you imagine Romeo and Juliet starring "Sugar Bear" as Romeo and "Mama June" as Juliet
Wait a minute. Wasn't this thread about things that our Northern brethren might want to avoid if they move to The South. I can't think of ANYTHING that they would want avoid more than these folks. More annoying than chiggers or fire ants. More dangerous than snakes or gators. Exposure to them for more than a couple of seconds can cause irreversible brain damage.

True. I sometimes wonder why Southerners laugh instead of getting po'd by some of the characterizations on popular low brow TV shows. Blacks no longer laugh at Stepin Fetchit. Asians never laughed at Charlie Chan. Most gybes at Yankees (Thurston Howell on Gilligan's Island, Archie Bunker) are true and generally not demeaning anyway so not much to complain about there. Stand up is kinda different and I can see why everyone accepts and likes the Foxworthy type humor but the "reality" TV shows about Southerners doing stupid stuff (mostly scripted I'm sure) is surprising in this day and age. Would we stand for a show about rapacious Jewish bankers or dumb Polish families?

I think we can all admire the ability to laugh at ourselves and I think that is what Foxworthy does so well but that is different than perpetuating harmful stereotypes.

(By the way New Jersey is a Southern state as far as I'm concerned so the Kardashians are on you guys!)

Maybe we can arrange a trade with Canada. They take the Kardashian tribe (including Bruce or Brenda or whatever her name is) and we'll accept Justin Bieber on a temporary visa. An even though awful trade.
