Surely that is not the case in Texas or Arizona with Mexicans but in .....

Don't you mean "with Americans" instead of "with Mexicans" since Americans in the 1820s to early 1840s were the immigrants to Texas. Texas was part of Mexico and full of Mexicans who were already living there since 1821 and, prior to that Texas was a Spanish territory.

Yep. But don't tell today's Texans.

An old timer in Houston once told me, "Heck, as far as I'm concerned, anybody born north of I-10 is a Yankee to me"!

Anybody born South of the Canada/U.S of A. border is a yankee to me.

Maintaining important aspects of your culture/heritage/country is very important and is what makes a country great. It allows the best of all worlds to mesh. What is NOT ok is when these groups want to remain separate ie you have little countries in a big country. In your neck of the woods, over the years the "Frenchness" of Quebec has clashed with the "Englishness" of the rest of Canada. This may have been worked out by now, but back in the 70's? or 80's?, I remember there was a vote to secede by Quebec that was close to successful. Certainly by the time the 1st generation is born in a country they should identify with that country as who they are but be proud of where their ancestors came from. Example- If your parents were from Italy and you were born in the US then you are an American of Italian heritage NOT an Italian-American.

It would be a mistake to confuse the English-French issue with the notion of a cultural mosaic. As you may have learned from your history classes Canada is composed of two founding nations, English and French, and indeed every single Canadian federal agency is required by law to provide service in both English and French. As well, every Minister of Parliament is required to speak both English and French, and good luck getting any kind of high level federal job in Ottawa (Canada's Capital) without being bilingual. So, both French and English are very Canadian.

A cultural mosaic on the other hand, is a collection of individuals who come from another country/culture and retain their cultural identity, and there are many sectors even here in Toronto where for example the Italians live in close proximity to each other, or the Greeks, or the Potuguese, or the Chinese – and Toronto has one of the largest China towns in North America. And it all works out very nicely, especially if you're looking for a good restaurant!

Also, don't confuse the French – English identity of Canadians with the machinations of a bunch of politicians who tried to get people to vote one way or the other, unsuccessfully, and for no good reason. Quebec is never going to "separate" from the rest of Canada. It would be like your left arm separating from your right arm.

So much for Canadian history. Now the Australians….

A young Texan grew up wanting to be a lawman. He grew up big, 6' 2", strong as a longhorn, and fast as a mustang. He could shoot a bottle cap tossed in the air at 40 paces. When he finally came of age, he applied to where he had only dreamed of working: the West Texas Sheriff's Department.

After a series of tests and interviews, the Chief Deputy finally called him into his office for the young man's last interview. The Chief Deputy said, "You're a big strong kid and you can really shoot. So far your qualifications all look good, but we have, what you might call, an "Attitude Suitability Test", that you must take before you can be accepted.

We just don't let anyone carry our badge, son."

Then, sliding a service pistol and a box of ammo across the desk, the Chief said, "Take this pistol and go out and shoot:

six illegal aliens,

six lawyers,

six meth dealers,

six Muslim extremists,

six Democrats,

and a rabbit."

"Why the rabbit?" queried the applicant.

"You pass," said the Chief Deputy. "When can you start?"

I just want to know which side he's going to fight for when he comes down south.. Is he going to be a yankee spy ,or is he going to fight for the confederacy ??

You do understand that some of us southerners are still fighting that dang civil war ? I'll be glad when that war ends !

So are bib overalls a southern thing? i thought it was a blue coller worker thing?

Haven't seen too many people up here wear them... maybe once or twice in 20 years.

The Civil War, the second one that is, only ended in that the shooting stopped. The reason behind the Second Civil War still exists and is getting worse.

Being a Yankee and moving South is ok. What is a problem is when a Yankee moves south and is a Carpet Bagger. My county is full of them and they want to make our county just like the scat hole they made and left behind up Nawth. What is ironic is that the Yankees elect people who they rail against. Danged if I can understand it.

Dan
