I had always heard that one as a lawyer joke but it guess it is multi purpose. What is the difference between a dead dog and a dead Northerner in the middle of a Southern road? There are skid marks in front of the dog.

We have a term for it here, we call it the "cultural melting pot". Works great – especially here in Toronto, which is reputedly the most multicultural city in the world.
Both halves are accentuated?? PEE-CON ????![]()
Funny story, A few years ago, We had a GE turbine crew straight from Lousiana, complete with bib overalls up to replace the buckets on a gas turbine. We get a weather phenonom here called LAKE EFFECT snow, where a small band of extremely heavy snow can form over Lake Ontario, and dump FEET of snow overnight, and last for days....
Well, the first night, those fellas were throwing snowballs and whooping it up. The second night, they asked how much could we get, and how long will it last. The third night they wanted OUT BAD!!!! So, now I get to try chiggers and snakes...

Maintaining important aspects of your culture/heritage/country is very important and is what makes a country great. It allows the best of all worlds to mesh. What is NOT ok is when these groups want to remain separate ie you have little countries in a big country. In your neck of the woods, over the years the "Frenchness" of Quebec has clashed with the "Englishness" of the rest of Canada. This may have been worked out by now, but back in the 70's? or 80's?, I remember there was a vote to secede by Quebec that was close to successful. Certainly by the time the 1st generation is born in a country they should identify with that country as who they are but be proud of where their ancestors came from. Example- If your parents were from Italy and you were born in the US then you are an American of Italian heritage NOT an Italian-American.Oops! I meant "Cultural Mosaic" - the idea that people can get along and enjoy each other and yet still retain important aspects of the country/culture they came from. A very different model than the "Cultural Melting Pot" idea.
Our current (and newly elected) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a big deal out of this issue when he wrote his recent book "Common Ground". I would highly recommend it to anyone who is worried that immigrants who bring their cultures with them might disturb the fabric and harmony of our society.
I grew up in South Georgia and your pronunciation is correct for at least that region. My wife is from Maryland and the first time she heard me say that, I thought she was going to lose it.its regional. Around here and i say PEE-CAN.
But all of the those groups KNEW that in the end the path to success in this country was to learn the language and to assimilate. Not give up you heritage, but become part of the melting pot. Many of those families still speak their native tongue in their homes or with friends, but they don't expect everyone to cater to them in their native language when they are out of their communities. Today many of our immigrants that come in have no desire to ever learn the language or customs of this country. We are no longer a "melting pot" where each group that comes in adds a little spice to the mix. Today we are becoming the Balkans where each group wants to maintain their cultural identity unchanged and separate instead of mixing in the pot.
I just want to know which side he's going to fight for when he comes down south.. Is he going to be a yankee spy ,or is he going to fight for the confederacy ??
You do understand that some of us southerners are still fighting that dang civil war ? I'll be glad when that war ends !
