Smith&Wesson M&P Shield. Available in 9mm or 40-cal. It's less than 1" wide but with the extended magazine, it fits a large hand too. Easy to carry. Practically fits in your shirt pocket.

Go to Academy Sports & Outdoors or a large gun shop. You can look and feel the different makes and models there to narrow your choices. Then do some Google research on the final candidates. You can use that excuse when you visit the stores so you don't get pressured into buying one then.

Be aware that current events and the Christmas season may limit your choices. They're flying off the shelves as we speak.

Thanks, boys. I knew this post would have a lot of suggestions, that's what I'm looking for. CCWKen, that S&W 9mm small size sounds good. I like that you said it about fit in shirt pocket. I just got home from one of my great gun shops here. I looked at a Kimber 9mm, list for about $700, but I can get it for a good bit off, plus my shop here gives all veterans a 10% discount on everything. It looks like a quality gun. I ain't rich, but I cannot abide low quality. I'll have to ask if they have that Shield one. They are so busy, I could hardly move. I have a Dad/Son gun shop nearby, the old boy told me two years ago that if he didn't sell another gun or ammo for 10 years, they'd be set they've sold so many! Keep'em coming boys.

Let me narrow it down a bit. I mentioned I'd like to stay with either .22 or 9mm. Let's just keep it at 9mm. I know probably every argument there is about caliber. It will be 9mm for me.

All I want is 9mm.

I have two Springfield XD's ;a sub-compact in 9MM and a compact in 40 S&W.Excellent factory triggers and both in your price range.Springfield was one of the first with "striker fired" and many have had to follow suit.

I've heard this is actually one of the better shooting "9mm Browning" pistols around. It was also not so expensive so as to deter you from actually taking it.
