greetings,

my neighbor asked me to take a look at his 1983 116 with a 338 snowblower. he had the belt off because it was getting frayed on the edges. his primary issue was that during the last snow, the blower did not blow.

this is a used machine and will be the first winter for him with it. he tried it on the first snow and gave up and went back to his walk behind.

so, i took a look. tightened a pulley, checked chain tension on the blower, all seemed in order. put the belt back on it what appeared to be the correct routing.

belt tracked good, no fraying on the edges like he had previously . . .

but the blower is spinning the wrong way !!!

the PTO is turning counterclockwise if you were on the floor looking up.

i am at a loss. the manual didn't have complete pictures of the belt routing, but it looked correct to me.
he had purchased a new belt and it was fraying right away. when i put it back on it tracked true. but, it was probably spinning in the right direction when he installed it despite the fraying.
the poor performance of snowblowing leads me to believe it was spinning the wrong way at the time.

i appreciate you reading this and if you might have any suggestions that would be great.
a belt routing diagram would be helpful just to confirm i got it right.

thank you
bruce

A pic or two of what you are faced with will help.

I believe the 338 is a snow thrower, not a snowblower. (just that there is an auger and a separate blower/fan for the snowblower).
But if that is the case, the rotor/auger also blows out the snow.
And there is a twist in the belt. Here is a schematic from jdparts.com

thank you beenthere

i stand corrected, this is a single stage snow thrower.

the diagram is a little misleading re. the belt. there is a drive pulley and tension pulley on the thrower. on the tractor there is a PTO pulley and 2 idler pulleys.
here are a few pictures.

I think the belt is on wrong but I'm a little disoriented by the pictures.

Normal design has power/rotation PULLING on the driven device's input. In other words, the pulling side of a belt should never have an idler between the power source and the driven source. It's always on the take-up side. Note the direction of the belt motion in the diagram above. This shows the rotation of the PTO side (CCW from the bottom) PULLING directly on the driven pulley.

Gotta run for now. Spurs game is on! :)

Thank you CCWKen,

this makes sense. He initially had the belt installed that way (correct) and that is when the edge of the belt started to fray. When I installed it (wrong) it appeared to follow in line with the idler. In the first picture notice how the idler is angled towards the left side of the tractor. When installed correctly, this angle creates a bend in the belt if it is routed towards the right (correct) side. In addition, the drive pulley is in alignment with the tensioner pulley when installed wrong.

I don't know the history of this tractor. I don't know how complete or correct the thrower is. I am assuming it is the correct thrower for this tractor.

thank you for your help,

bruce

Those throwers will run backwards nicely if the belt is routed wrong through the mule drive.

Either you or he needs to check the pulleys to make sure they are tight held by the bolts and nuts and can spin as a frozen or binding pulley with a bad bearing will wear a belt edge
quickly.

They should spin freely with little to no effort and if one or all rattle when spinning they need to be changed.

When you have belt wear like that always suspect ALL three of the pulleys and get a kevlar belt to replace that one as snow casters have avery high shock loading at times.

As old as it is it will not hurt to replace the two pulleys on the cradle and the flat pulley as they are the ones that spin at the highest speeds which translates to a much higher bearing speed on the inner race of the sealed bearings which evetually translates to trouble in the middle of a snow storm

It will no hurt to check the engine pulley either to be sure its tight too.

Our 1967 IH cub cadet had a final chain drive with a bevel gear and belt coming off the engine pulley.

Both are great machines with great snow casters.
