Timberline 25 shingles going bad

Attic venting is primarily to reduce moisture but almost all shingles will last longer without extremely high attic temps too.

A few years ago I put in a whole house fan but installed it in the garage. I have a temp sensor mounted in the attic to monitor things. A hot summer day will easily see 140 degrees F but after turning the fan on it will drop to ambient in 90 minutes. I've read numerous places where temps that high greatly reduce shingle life.

Hi Eddie.......depends on where you live.......down south I agree moisture is a much bigger concern year round.......up here moisture in attics is more of a problem in the winter and usually caused by improper vapor barriers allowing the warm moist air in the house up into the attic where it hits the cold air.......been in attics where the decking and rafters are frosted over........also seen the ducting from bath exhaust fans just discharge into the attic instead of outside....my favorite is when the duct extends just up to the ridge vent instead of through the roof.......guess where all the warm moist air goes.....it doesn't effect the shingles but will rot out the plywood sheathing.......for us up here it's the heat in attics that kills the shingles.....I've seen 20 year rated shingle needing replacement in 7 years on a hip roof with inadequate vents.......a lot of colonials rely on small gable vents and a couple of 4"x8" soffit vents........no where near enough........you are correct in that you need the flow......low to high.......chimney effect.......if you rely on ridge vents they have to be installed correctly....can't tell you how many times I've seen the plywood sheathing not cut back far enough and the ridge beam blocks the opening.......and the roofer will not say anything and still slap the ridge vent over it......and cathedral ceilings really need to be thought out well in terms of ventilation....up here a 2x10 rafter will not give you enough room for the required insulation as well as air space so you need to over design the rafter size and go with a 2x12 or put in a false ceiling.........Jack

Sounds like everything was done right, which would suggest bad shingles. Only GAF will be able to determine if the will take responsibility for it, and if they do, what will they do about it. In my experience with warranties, if they accept responsibility for a defective product, all they do is give you another. They do not remove and install the new product, or include the labor to do this. They also don't provide anything for the additional materials needed to repair their defective one. So to sum it up, most warranties are not worth the time or effort to get a replacement. And once you do get that replacement, do you really want to continue to use that brand?

I did find there is a class action lawsuit, but I agree it is more hassle than it is worth. I am just going to reroof most likely with steel, but I just had to vent my frustration with Timberline. Thanks, Bill

Did you contact the manufacturer? Is it GAF? Is the roofing company still around the installed them?

I don't know that particular shingle, but find it hard to believe that the shingles are failing due to age at only 20 years. Roofs are very simple, but if you cut one corner, things go bad quickly.

You'd be surprised Eddy. I built my mother's house back in the 80's, and put Bird/Son shingles on it from local roofing supply. Within two years, they were falling apart...literally coming apart ! Did get some help on the cost of new materials (definitely not Bird and Son !), but not the labor. It was about then I discovered building material warranties aren't worth the cost of the paper they use to print them.

My original 25 yr shingles installed 97, replaced in 13. They dont last their stated life. Mine replaced due to hail damage, but were due anyways. Had rotting roof deck with proper venting.
