Blue smoke on cold start/cold outside

I agree, and it would explain why it was there, then not.
It occurs to me that the dealer was actually on the right track from the get go. Wonder what made them conclude the initial, and likely actual problem was bad fuel? Seems they were right on from the beginning....

I must say, I'm surprised that the oil dealer didn't ask what the 55 gallon drums of fuel were being used for? I realize they would not suspect someone would use high sulfur fuel in a newer tractor, but wouldn't most use or ask for off road diesel for farm use?
I'm surprised NH doesn't require ULSD use anyway?!

And the dealer also charged for stanadyne fuel treatment. Since they said it was bad fuel, this was likely the stanadyne injector cleaner. That probably cleaned things up to 'like new'. If it were mine, I would drain, fill with ULSD, treat with the cleaner again, and move on. I'll bet it clears up and causes no long term issues.

It will take a while to run a couple of tanks with the cleaner. I will update once I do and post a new video.

Ritcheyus nailed it I believe. Home heating oil is not polished to the quality of ulsd. Not meant for internal combustion engines. Nozzles bigger than injector tips and way more torrent of other contaminates than diesels. Sulfur is not the issue more than other stuff in there. Do not let your dealer know you have run this as this I am sure that voids your warranty. Think maybe they do already from past work. Look at a furnace filter vs engine filter with approximately same hours. Hope what you are doing works.

The filter has never looked bad. Even when the dealer changed it. They were baffled since the fuel they removed looked and smelled identical to the fuel they installed. No water or contaminants visible. I have been using it lightly over the last couple days. Yesterday on a cold start at 25 degrees outside it started rigt up with 5 secs of blue smoke when it cleared. It also smells better when running. Less diesel smell. It is funny that no where on my tractor does it say ulsd. It just says use diesel only in the manual

I'm glad you have a diagnosis.

Plug in the block heater. What do you expect a cold diesel is going to do on startup? Just because the engine will start with grid heaters or glow plugs. It doesn't mean that a block heater is not a good idea. It's not a port or direct injected gasoline highway vehicle where there is little to no smoke.

Your tractor was built to run on ULSD, period. Just because NH has arcane regulations that don't comply with the rest of the USA, and probably the world, doesn't mean it should run on anything but what it is specked for. It's YOUR responsibility to know what it's supposed to run on, check your owner's manual, service manual or with your dealer. They should all tell you the same thing, since whenever the regs specked tractors to run on ULSD, that's what your needs to run properly AND to meet EPA regulations.:confused3:
