Why are we so willing to spend other peoples money?

Another issue that I would like to see discuss more when an OP asks for advice, is the issue of value for your money.

For example, one of our fellow TBNers recently was asking about whether he should get a Kubota BX25 versus a B2650. The price difference is about $10,000, taxes included. So then he needs to know, what does he get for the extra $10,000? There is of course the subjective matter of the "feel" of the two tractors as you sit on and or drive them. However there is the much more technical matter of how much does the FEL lift, how powerful is the backhoe, what is the swing arc of the backhoe, how deep does it dig, how "tippy" the two tractors are, etc. etc. etc. To just say that you need a bigger tractor, or that the smaller one is enough, doesn't tell the real story. Lots of times a bigger tractor or more HP doesn't really give you that much more in performance if you look at the specs. (Take the B 2650 versus the B 3350, for example. The FEL specs and the backhoe specs are the same on both tractors, so you're basically left with a little faster speed and more power to the power take off. Well, if you're running a Bush Hogg or a post hole auger, or a wood chipper, that increased horsepower may be very important to you, but for most people it isn't.)

And yes it is SO much fun spending other People's Money!

The OP needs to give us more information about what he needs to do. In the thread in question the op said he wanted to skid out some dead fall, move some rocks around, maintain some trails, maintain about an acre food plot, and do some mowing. Well, a BX can do all of that. If he came back and said he wants to skid out 30" diameter trees whole, move 5 ton rocks. Maintain 10 miles of trails, and plow the food plot then a BX clearly won't work.

The one that has always stuck in my mind , and this was many years ago was a poster who was a semi regular, sort of gave the idea that he was just getting by, but comes on and asks for some advice about purchasing a good used machine. He says that his budget is X amount and he simply cannot go over X amount. After tons of advice about what to look for and look out for, a lot of time spent by many posters he comes back and says that he found and bought what he needed, only spent X amount plus $100,000.

Frankly, that sort of upset me, asking questions, taking up a lot of peoples time and then goes and does what he did. I'm not saying that shouldn't have bought what he bought, just why lead us all on when that was not what he was looking for anyway. Without a doubt he would have gotten different advice if he would have said that he was willing to spend the kind of money that he spent.

I know that it is just the internet, but every once in awhile certain things just catch us wrong and for whatever reason it just stays with us. Me at least. ;)

So, just to emphasize, the more information given by an OP, the better the advice can be.

Quote: [Well, if you can afford to buy a new tractor then a few dollars more isn't a big deal.]

Well some of us like me, only spend what we have in cash. The banks don't own me. I don't finance. That's why I don't worry about the economy and what is going on. I prefer to live stress free within my means.

That's why I also have lots of pics posted in the Kubota forums showing what my "useless" little B2620 has done. LOL.

I agree with Dave, the government spends other peoples money. People ask for opinions, they get them and then they decide how to spend their money. I don't see anyone relinquishing control of their money. Everyone is still responsible for their own decisions and purchases. To suggest otherwise is silly.

Everyone's needs and budget are different.

Some of this is caused by the dealers pushing people to buy the biggest they can "afford"

Saw on ad for some off brand tractor, $465 a month at 5.65% for 15 YEARS. Guaranteed the person buying this tractor would not be using it for farming or any commercial use.

Bought a disc mower several years ago, one dealer insisted no way the tractor I wanted to use would pick one up or run it at all, said needed to buy bigger tractor first. Other dealers, didn't care. Bought mower elsewhere and have mowed several years with "too small of a tractor" that easily handles and powers it.

c'mon Murph, you know I had my heart set on that Ace Hardware Poulan with the B&S 500 engine, guaranteed for one year or 100 hours, whichever comes
first. Actually I bought one of them for 179 bucks for a ditch mower and it's one of the most satisfying, albeit tinny mowers I've bought. And since my steep slopes only go for about three feet, I think I'm ok...and look at the change in my pocket.
