4K TV's or not

Just a fair warning to those shopping for a 4K TV. All the content you see at the box stores is being fed by a hard drive.. You will not see that picture at home.

We have a store here that feeds all their TVs with a standard HD signal and the 4K TV's look terrible. Particularly the Samsung's, which really shocked me. Noise and pixelation everywhere.

What signal are you sending to the tv? 480, 720, 1080, or 4k? A lower quality signal will look worse on the larger tv. For example dvd's look ok on my 65" plasma. If I'm watching on our 110" projector they look awful. Have to jump to blueray.

We tried BlueRay player and it was only marginally better than SAT. Sport mode improved the motion blur quite a lot but didn't eliminate it. Also only advantage of the curved screen is less reflection from light sources.

I have the Samsung 6500s 4K and they are great. I did do a google search and found someone who had spent a lot of time tweaking the settings and set mine to what he published. As mentioned the best broadcast I get is, of course, 1080p. I did not go far up the line for that reason, but am very happy.

I think I will stay with my 1980 Zenith Color Console as long as it keeps working...

Remember, "The quality goes in before the name goes on"

The problem with technology is you are always playing catchup to keep up...

Often I find the best solution is to opt out...

So that I am clear. Are we saying the new 4K TV sets are basicly future proofing, as there is not real 4K content just yet to feed to them? That our regular 1080P HDTV sets are as good right now with the readily available content? Is this the consensus?

Um...I think we have come a ways down the road since the 1980's Zenith sets... That is back in the era that I used to work on them..They were good sets for the time.. Maybe you have an H series chassis? I used to do telephone work in the plant where they were made in Springfield, Mo. That was after I quit being a TV tech and a Law Dawg in between. I have some tales to tell about that TV plant, some really interesting things went on there.:)

That is how I understand it. I have a Comcast super drop on the pole next to my shop (stars lined up) and the best signal I can get is 1080p. 4K (as I understand it) is twice that or 2160p but it isn't available. Once (if?) 2160p becomes available my set would be ready.

Interestingly, I had to select 1080p in the advanced settings to get 1080p, the default was 720p even through 1080p is available. The only way I can tell what my TV is receiving is to use the TV's remote's info button. I can't find where the Comcast remote tells me. Sounds like a shell game on Comcast's part as bandwidth is at a premium.

Ultra = I am with you. I shut off cable TV about 12 years ago. I have NO TV. Yes, there are 2 actual sets in the house, but they are older, and only get used with OLD movies ! I save lots of $$$.
