Cat barfs way too much--any cures besides a .22?

2 or 4 times a week he barfs. Been going on for years, but more as he gets older. He's been an indoor cat since he spent a couple days & nights in a tree thanks to a coyote. Wife said he was one of the best cats we've had & she didn't want to lose another to the coyotes, so she has been cleaning out the sandbox for maybe 12-13 years now. He shows no signs of being about to croak & had a physical a couple months ago. But we are looking at getting a new carpet (partially due to cat barf stains) and we don't want to do that and have it stained soon after.

So, any cat barfing cures?

You might be on to something, could be a lead deficiency. just kidding

If I got to that point and couldn't care for myself anymore. I'd probably go ahead and just shoot myself. I don't have any kids. But if I did and if killing me wouldn't land them in prison or the death penalty then I would welcome them to shoot and kill me once I got to the point of needing ongoing care. When my 12 year old dog was at the end of her life last winter I would've just went ahead and shot her if I had a gun. She was in so much pain that I felt bad for her. Couldn't afford to have a vet put her down either. It was such a relief to me when I found her dead as I knew then she wasn't in pain anymore. She went blind, couldn't stand up to even potty. Every time she tried to potty she would tumble over. She had to lean on me or my dad to eat. It was just heartbreaking to see her in so much pain. It also breaks my heart to see people so bad off in nursing homes. Would I love to live to make it to 100 or beyond? Yes I would. But only if I'm able to care for myself. If not then I hope I die before my health gets so bad that I can't care for myself.
One of my neighbors shot himself. He was dying of cancer. He didn't want to suffer through that or put his family through the stress and financial burden of caring for him. Honestly I can't blame him.

We have a 17 year old cat that is still pretty sprightly, but a few months ago she was barfing a lot. Took her to the vet and she had lost a lot of weight. Vet did some tests and diagnosed kidney failure, which can be gradual in older cats. She recommended we try a specific food for older cats with kidney failure, and contrary to my expectations, it has worked wonders. Cat gained weight back, stopped barfing, and seems happier now. The food is more expensive than regular cat food, but I still think we got off easy.

My wife was ready to shoot the cat (she says we need fewer creatures to clean up after) but I figured with a 17 year old cat, the least we could do is make her final years as happy and healthy as possible. I guess I feel obligated to care for her the best we can. When the vet says it's time to shoot the cat, then I'll listen.

Tile floors? :D

Actually, we removed carpet and put hardwood and tile on the first floor of our home due to having pets. We will always have Boston Terriers. Carpet and pets don't go together in the grand scheme of things.

Op stated the cat had a checkup recently when he (the cat) got shots updated but forgot to ask about the barfing. It is annoying when you forget follow up questions in the moment, though this one I doubt I would have forgot to ask! In any event, one possible answer provided above but would require another trip to vet.
