When we built our new house, and subsequent addition, we determined that we would never again have carpet - first for kids, second for pets. We do have some rugs, but at least they can be cleaned thoroughly when necessary and thrown out when beyond that.
As far as the cat problem goes, we have had up to 4 indoor cats at one time, and have had that same issue occasionally. We tried a few different brands of food and have settled on one that isn't much more expensive than what we were buying, and the cats rarely throw up now (I think it is a Purina that is made for indoor cats - I can recognize the bag when I go to buy it). We still get the occasional hairball, but not nearly that much throw up.
Absolutely, cats can be a pain, but when it's cold outside and I've been out doing something, it's nice to sit in a recliner and have my favorite cat (which is actually an indoor/outdoor that stays inside more in the winter) curl up in my lap, and we can both take a nap.
Good luck with your troubles. Take care.
