Cat barfs way too much--any cures besides a .22?

When we built our new house, and subsequent addition, we determined that we would never again have carpet - first for kids, second for pets. We do have some rugs, but at least they can be cleaned thoroughly when necessary and thrown out when beyond that.

As far as the cat problem goes, we have had up to 4 indoor cats at one time, and have had that same issue occasionally. We tried a few different brands of food and have settled on one that isn't much more expensive than what we were buying, and the cats rarely throw up now (I think it is a Purina that is made for indoor cats - I can recognize the bag when I go to buy it). We still get the occasional hairball, but not nearly that much throw up.

Absolutely, cats can be a pain, but when it's cold outside and I've been out doing something, it's nice to sit in a recliner and have my favorite cat (which is actually an indoor/outdoor that stays inside more in the winter) curl up in my lap, and we can both take a nap.

Good luck with your troubles. Take care.

I feed our cat a special diet called EN for his digestive system. He only barfs now when he eats too fast and his poop is now more better firm.:)

I'm all in for the .22 idea ! I saw a good cat once...he was FLAT ! Sorry, I don't like any indoor animals, just me ! I am happily pet free. We travel a lot on spur of the moment & I don't need or want to be concerned about "Fluffy "

Sorry? Yes you are.

We have two indoor cats. The long-hair one coughs up fur balls. We got him some fur ball medicine in a tube (like toothpaste) from the vet. You squeeze out an inch of it onto the top of his front paw once a week and he licks it till its gone. It reduced the hair balls significantly.

Out short hair rescue cat (we got him when he was 10), barfed up quite often. We had him tested for allergies (kinda expensive), but they found out he's allergic to tomatoes, soy and one other thing. So we found cat food that doesn't contain those ingredients (which are fairly common), and he's pretty good now. Only coughs up a little foam about the size of a tablespoon maybe once or twice a month, and that's usually after he gets into something he isn't supposed to.

Our house has a colored and finished concrete floor. We did this for cost, looks and easy cleanup due to kids and dogs. Works well.

We HATE carpet, it just holds dirt and can never be cleaned but it is cheap compared to other floors. We do have some small rugs we have in some rooms which is my mom's idea. When they get frayed and messy, I just take them to the dump.

Pets and carpets are not good combinations due to hair, dander, puke, pee, and poo. If ya'll are going to keep pets, I would consider floor coverings other than carpet, wood, stone, or tile, and use small rugs that can be tossed if needed. I know this is problematic though.

Not sure if diet is the cats problem but it would not surprise me. The wifey used to buy the best dog food she could find but even the different foods we tried were bothering the dog. The wifey started the dog on a raw food diet, mainly meat, and the dog had more energy, was not itching due to food allergies, did not puke much any more, the size of the poo piles were drastically reduced, and almost no flies going after poo piles. The dog food is getting cooked right now because she has a growth on her leg and the food needs to be cooked due to the medicine the dog is taking. Danged growth has almost disappeared which really was surprising.

We have changed the diet for the dogs over the years due to their health issues. Getting the right diet has made a difference.

Later,
Dan

"Doctor," said the patient, "I need help! I can't stop acting like a cat!" "How long have you had this problem?" the doctor asked. "Let's see," said the patient, "Mom had the litter in '41!!!!

2 or 4 times a week he barfs. Been going on for years, but more as he gets older. He's been an indoor cat since he spent a couple days & nights in a tree thanks to a coyote. Wife said he was one of the best cats we've had & she didn't want to lose another to the coyotes, so she has been cleaning out the sandbox for maybe 12-13 years now. He shows no signs of being about to croak & had a physical a couple months ago. But we are looking at getting a new carpet (partially due to cat barf stains) and we don't want to do that and have it stained soon after. So, any cat barfing cures?

Funny thing. We had the same problem. We're on town water that is so bad it makes me sick. So I thought, if it makes me sick, perhaps it is making the cat sick.
Started giving him bottled water. Hasn't barfed since.

My cats have this issue when they eat room temp wet cat food. Once it has been in the fridge, no problems. When we open up a new can, we have to remember to refrigerate it first or we will have to clean up a mess.

Didn't Julia Roberts do a movie about that? :D

I think my cat barfs because she eats so fast. She was animal shelter cat so I think she is just programmed to eat fast so she gets her share. Seems to come in spurts though. She may go a week without barfing and then she may do it several days in a row. I feed her good food, IAMS Indoor Weight and Hairball control. But it doesn't seem to matter. Never any hair balls, just food.
