My geothermal compressor just died.

I'm a geothermal dealer in Canada and the compressor should be max $ 1500 but probably lower and and HVAC tech should be able to change it in 2-4 hours max. Shop around but I would change the compressor before replacing the Heat pump.

Thanks for the info. Should get a quote Monday.

What are you paying per KWH down there? I pay .21 cents by the time we factor in taxes, etc. Lucky my geo is only 2.5 ton and we burn a lot of firewood in the airtight to supplement the five year old Geo. It draws about 2.5kw when heating via the lake loop.

We pay 11.3c/kWh or about 12.3 with all the fixed charges.

My $2400 included air freight for the part and two service calls, so based on above statement, you should be in same ball park.
Good luck steve

I am also a dealer in Canada and I would get some firm prices first thing. The compressors are mostly
Copeland scroll compressors all manufacturers use them. If you decide to go with new unit I would look at Waterfurnace as they are at the top of the line, that's not my brand but I wish it was.

The compressor sells on line for about 900 USD plus 100 shipping so I am curious what the dealer asks for it. My unit is R410A.
I don't know how much is the refrigerant. I suppose they will evacuate the it from the unit and reuse most of it. Plus 4 hours of work, two hours of travel and soft start. Added all together the quote should be around 2000$.

R410 dont Replace it, agree between $2000 and $2500, your unit newer than ours

Did anyone check to see if it was a burnout? If there is acid in the system to cause the compressor to fail, then additional dryer changes will be needed and a reason for failure must be determined. This means more money.

The motor shorted to ground. I will keep the compressor and open it to see what exactly went wrong. I read something on internet about acidity causing heat exchanger failures but not compressor. I will ask about that.

I have a Waterfurnace ground loop geo system. 22 years old so I feel like I'm on borrowed time with the unit! Only problems I've had both occurred last winter when I had to replace blower motor and flow center (not the pumps, but the console). What a shame to have to deal with your compressor going kaput after 11 years.

For what it's worth, I'd seriously consider the 30% federal tax credit for new geothermal installations through the end of 2016. It has to be a new geo installation, but replacing an existing geo system still works. Here's a link to details: 30% Tax Credit Geothermal Heating & Cooling Install - 2015 Geo thermal

I'll probably go ahead and install a new system during this year to take advantage of the rebate.
