the last person paying bills by check?

Appreciate it...

No idea how it double posted???

Well, as so many of us get double posts, its probably just the same reason, only since its a new thread, it makes two. I know the management is looking into the whole double post problem. Nothing the mods can do about it. ;)

Re: Am I the last person paying bills by check?

Just a thought here. If you always pay by check then you have to keep a fair amount of money in the bank. We know that the IRS can close your account and take your money. There is some concern that the next big government bail out will be funded by money confiscated from depositors accounts. Can't happen you say? Really.

I live in an area where cash is king. I am paid many times in cash. Can't recall the last time I used a debit card. A major portion of my bills are paid by credit card. Automatically. The USPS has lost mail for me in the past. Lost a title to a vehicle being mailed from out of state. Took months to get a replacement. I am not diligent about opening mail so automatic payment of my bills works best for me. I still write checks mostly to small businesses that need payment on the spot for services rendered. To each his own.

Just speaking about lost mail... paid off my mortgage and the county recorder had my street and house number wrong... I mean the right information is on the mortgage deed!

Anyway... it was floating around for 5 weeks as best I can figure.

Maybe I should start a new thread:

How do you pay your bills?

I'm not married to checks... it's just that cancelled checks have saved me more than a few times.

Cash is too hard to deal with when you are paying bills for others...

At least running all deposits and payments through a checking account is transparent should there ever be a question...

I'm a firm believer in electronic bill payment. Saves me time, driving and postage. I only write checks when I shop at Costco and for my property taxes. And yes, "things" do get screwed up now and then. Nothing is perfect.

I always pay my ransom[property tax] by check and make a copy of it and do it in person.

No offense intended here. You are the guy I hate to be behind in the checkout counter at the local Tractor Supply Store. He doesn't even start writing the check until he has the total. Then everyone has to stand there and wait while he does it....... :)

LOL ... none taken!!! Yes I'm that guy. I even take the time to be sure its entered in my ledger... only takes a few more seconds of time!!!!

Time is the only thing we can't buy or get more of. I was at the grocery store in the 10 or less items line. The guy in front of me had less than 10 items. So far ok. The cashier rang up his items with a total. He was wearing a backpack. He proceeded to remove the backpack, dug around and found his checkbook, then wrote out the check. The rest of us could have gone through the line, paid and been out the door. He was an inconsiderate ***hole. I hope you have a little more consideration for other people than that.

I have been doing the electronic bill payment since 1998 when the Royal Bank of Canada first offered it. I write maybe one check a year. I had to push hard to get my company to start with direct deposit. As far as a creditor complaining, 'you didn't pay this', I can go back 3 years electronically and find the payment and print it off. Some of my bills get paid in ca$h, too. The local garage is one of them. I don't have a problem walking around in the country with a couple thousand dollars in my pocket. The key words here are in the country, no way in the city would I have any more than $100.oo in pocket change. I never keep cash in my wallet. It is always in my right front pocket.

I still write a lot of checks but I am slowly converting to electronic funds. I used to go to a branch of my bank that was near work to cash a check for spending money maybe once a week. The head teller once asked if I had a ATM card. She explained with an ATM card I would not need to come in the bank. I explained it was easier for me to keep track of my money by watching the log in my checkbook that did not always get updated when using the ATM card. I also reminded her that if everyone used their ATM card, she would not be needed as a teller. I remembered that conversation a couple of months ago when I tried to cash a check at that branch. Sign on the door said the branch was closed but you could still use the ATM outside.

I know the largest banks still pay their vendors by paper check, mailed. That says a lot about what they feel is safe and controllable. These same lenders require most of their customers to have direct deposits. That is so they also have control of incoming payments compared to you sending payments. I follow the same processes, having direct deposits to my accounts and writing checks for most of my payments.
