Death knell for landlines - RANT

The landline business is dead, so don't expect the Telco's to put any money into the rural infrastructure unless it is subsidized like with the Connect America Fund. Our fiber to the premise Subdivisions have battery backup units that we install as part of the service. Hard to believe rural home service is being put on fiber, not real cost effective. Typically it is fiber to the node then copper from there to the home. Almost all of our installs are pure broadband, no land line service. Even though the land line service is still there for 911 purposes but the customer rarely wants it installed.

Funny you say that. I worked all summer back in 1990 in the cable vault at Whiteman AFB. I was a splicers helper, prepped the underground cable with splice cases, etc. Those 1800 pair cables are a beast to wrestle.

Wow, the largest I ever spliced were 600. Big enough for me.

The heavy users are about 25... we are small.

As far as I know we are. So,,,, you are saying your landline company allowed you to cancel your landline and still provide you with Internet service for $30 p/month???

That's the way mine works. No telephone just internet only (slowest DSL) on the same lines. $33 month. I use cell phone and never used my landline.

I just asked my phone company again this morning if I can discontinue my land line phone and keep my Internet. Got the sad horizontal shake of the head.

Aren't there any local internet companies that buy from someone like a Time Warner and beam it out in five mile circles? I live in worse than the middle of nowhere and can't even get DSL. I finally got high speed internet from a local guy that has Time Warner beamed from town to a dish on my neighbor's grain bin. It then gets dished to my dish and I have high sped internet. Many of my neighbors don't even have televisions.

I was under the impression there were all sorts f connections like this around the country. Any hope in your area?

Time Warner isn't any bargain either! Around here they are expensive, offer lousy service, and are down more than anyone else.
